About The Colorado Woodworker

Brad Borkowski (a.k.a. the Colorado Woodworker) is a high school woodshop teacher based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. Since 2013, he's run a successful store on Etsy in his spare time selling beautiful, handcrafted chessboards. After the release of Netflix's The Queen's Gambit, his sales skyrocketed! About The Chessboard

The chessboard originally started off as a customer’s idea and then turned into one of Brad's most popular designs. Its unique design includes various types of hardwoods that he commonly uses on other chessboards. The chessboard is all end grain and is built to be extremely long-lasting. It will surely become a family heirloom for generations to come.

  • Square size: 2.375 inches
  • Light squares: maple
  • Dark squares: walnut, wenge, bocote, padauk, Brazilian cherry, and purple heart
  • Border: mahogany

About The Contest

After watching the film, put on your thinking cap, let your creativity flow, and come up with a great name for the chessboard. (Note: It's referred to as the "Chaos" chessboard during the film.) Brad will judge entries based on their originality, resonance with the chessboard's aesthetic and craftsmanship, and relation to his personal journey and creative process. The lucky winner will be awarded the magnificent chessboard, handcrafted with love and passion by the Colorado Woodworker.
