Chess.com Sponsors The Jersey Women's Chess Team In The 2022 Olympiad

The Jersey women’s chess team is making history this year by attending their very first Olympiad, and Chess.com is happy to announce that we’ll be officially sponsoring the team’s efforts.

Trainer and team captain GM Alonso Zapata will be leading the team at the 44th Chess Olympiad, which takes place from July 28 to August 10 in Chennai, India. The team has been training hard over the last weeks, and we wish them the best of luck representing the Channel Islands in a historic moment!

As the largest of the Channel Islands (with a population of just over 100,000 people), Jersey is a self-governing Crown Dependency of the United Kingdom and is often considered to be its own nation.

“This is the first time Jersey has had enough active female players to send a women’s team to the FIDE Olympiad, so it is really exciting both for our federation and for our team," said board one player Tallulah Roberts (also known as Lularobs). "I feel so privileged to be a part of this and to train and play with such amazing teammates. This is a huge step towards creating a culture for women’s chess in Jersey and I can't wait to see where it leads us.”

Roberts will be streaming some of her preparation and taking lessons alongside renowned GM Irina Krush ahead of the tournament starting. The first coaching stream will take place Saturday, July 9, at 7:30 a.m. PT/16:30 CEST, and can be viewed on Twitch.tv/lularobs.
