On July 26, 2023, 13-year-old chess prodigy IM-elect Alice Lee joined the stage on Good Morning America to celebrate her latest title achievements and discuss her chess career.

Lee started playing chess at 6, under the influence of her older brother, Linden. He encouraged Lee to join her school's chess club in first grade, and her chess career took off.

Rise in Popularity

Throughout her chess journey, Lee participated in several chess clubs and numerous online and in-person tournaments, including the Pro Chess League, ChessKid events, and the Saint Louis Chess Club Championships.

From there, Lee quickly excelled in her chess performance, defeating multiple super-GMs and top-titled players.

She's so young and she's already at that level. I think she has very good chances of becoming a grandmaster.

What are your career plans? What's in your future right now?

"I haven't exactly planned out my career, but even if [chess is not my career], I would definitely do something related to chess. For example, AI, AI engines that help so many players, including myself..."

Any tips for us novices trying to play?

"Enjoy the game. Don’t be discouraged by losses. There’s a lot of great online resources out there; I would recommend utilizing them."

Enjoying the game will take you really far.
