The chess game played between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren in round 9 of the FIDE World Chess Championship 2023 began with a Ruy Lopez or Spanish Opening. White played 4. d3 to avoid the main lines of the Berlin Defense. Both players developed their pieces, and Black played an active move with 6... d5 to grab space in the center. White had a slight edge out of the opening. Black then sacrificed a pawn for activity and counterplay on the queenside. White's pieces then infiltrated on the kingside with the pin on f7 and a threat on the h6-pawn. Black defended accurately, but White maintained an advantage with the bishop pair.
