Ding Liren's post Game 1 comments on his opening prep and match strategy

WGM Vivian Gu asked these questions during the last 5 minutes of the post Game 1 press conference and Ding Liren preferred to answer in Mandarin.

I translated the comments into English.

Vivian Gu: First of all, congratulations on the win. In the game played today, why did you take a long think on move 7?   I know this question has  been answered earlier but I hope that you can elaborate on it.

Ding Liren: Should I speak in Mandarin?

VG: Both Mandarin and English are fine.

D: On move 7, I was recalling my opening preparation and  comparing it to what had occurred over the board. So I had to make a judgement on which ideas to use.

VG:  In your choice of the opening (French), did you intend to start solidly or were you playing for a win, taking into account your plus score against Gukesh in personal Classical game encounters?

D: The French Defense was obviously a risky opening  as White has many ways to gain the advantage.  However, before the match, I had prepared immensely.  But I was indeed surprised at the  opening variation he chose which wasn't entirely  what I had expected. So maybe the preparation didn't go that well.

VG: A last question please. Will the win today  have any influence to your planned strategy for the rest of the match?

D: I don't know actually, as I have never taken the lead in World Championships before. I will have a think about this but can't really say, it's supposed to be a secret!
