Istvan Cseresnyes. Some Early Hungarian Chess Revisited.

Good afternoon everyone. I have had a busy week! Apart from the 'joys' of earning a living I have been doing other stuff as well. Tata Steel chess to follow, two quite wonderful test matches going on, and my head in a chess book.

researching something else in my Hungarian chess books I got side-tracked - as I do - with this one.

I went through some games by a forgotten figure, Istvan Cseresnyes. There is a picture of him - in various forms - emanating from his obituary in a Hungarian newspaper column. One version.

To be honest I could not be bothered to pay the subscriptions for the Hungarian sites to research him, but will throw in a few bits here before we get to the chess.

Lets just enjoy ourselves with some of his games from the above book. Some fun from the gambit age. A few quick notes thrown in as I went along - no doubt the engines will rip them apart, but hopefully a bit of human perspective to add to the experience. You have to get into the spirit of the era and see the games for what they were - the chess version of 'Bazball'.. Have fun!!

One of my all time favourite final positions from an actual game.

This final game has some interesting history to go with it. With my usual attention to detail I have mislaid the link!!cry. From memory the story goes like this. back at the time with the political situation as it was, public meetings were banned. In order to restart the Pest Chess circle, the members had to convince the local government that they were not a revolutionary political group. The  game was part of the celebrations of opening the club. Even with the necessary permission from the local government the players were still stopped and questioned on their way to play.
The leader of the White team was a well known composer - responsible, I think, for the Hungarian national Anther. Lots of pictures of him to be found!

Astelus

It's a fun game - lots of ups and downs. Consultation games back then tended to go on for a long time. This one seems to have been played over three sessions spread over 15 days.

Erkel in later years.

That's my bit of self indulgence for today - hopefully you had some fun with it all. Cheers!
