Bangladeshi Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman Passes Away During National Chess Championship

Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman, a prominent figure in Bangladeshi chess, passed away while playing the 12th round of the National Chess Championship. Rahman, who was paired against Grandmaster Enamul Hossain, collapsed during the game. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Born on May 1, 1974, Rahman was the second Bangladeshi to earn the Grandmaster title, which he achieved in 2002. He also holds the highest FIDE rating ever achieved by a Bangladeshi chess player, reaching 2570 in October 2005. Rahman earned his International Master title in 1993.

Rahman made history with his son, FIDE Master Tahsin Tajwar Zia, when they became the first father-son duo to represent Bangladesh at the 44th Chess Olympiad.

The chess community in Bangladesh is mourning the loss of one of its greatest minds. Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman’s contributions to the sport and his legacy will be remembered for years to come.
