Certified trainer in the Steps Method (Van Wijgerden/Brunia) with over 30 years of coaching experience with a special focus on teaching youth.  My training covers many facets of chess, including building a framework to successfully analyze new positions, becoming a well-rounded player by exploring different types of positions, and how to deal with emotions during a chess game, so that you can best enjoy the game and perform well! 

Father and chess coach of WIM Lisa and WFM Donna Schut. Lisa is a three-fold medalist at the World and European Chess Youth Championships. At the age of 19, she became the youngest Dutch women's champion with a performance rating of 2559, ahead of GM Peng, IM Lanchava, and WGM Haast. She joined the Dutch national team at the age of 14 and competed in 4 Chess Olympiads for the Dutch national team. She was top-scorer in 2010 and 2012 with a score of 8.0/10 and 8.5/10, respectively. At the age of 15, she beat her first GM, Narciso Dublan.

Donna is the first girl to win the Dutch youth championships, ahead of current GMs Robin van Kampen and David Klein. At the European Youth Championship in 2006, she defeated national champions IM Nazi Paikizde and WGM Anne Haast.

Also coached IM Joost Berkvens (2409), a two-fold Dutch youth champion under 20. Moreover, extensive experience in giving simultaneous exhibitions and chess lectures at numerous chess clubs.

The skills learned in chess transfer to life more generally- such as improving problem-solving, concentration, and determination.
