Here is an article discussing the new FIDE rating list:

Anand tops the list at 2801, while Ivanchuk takes second spot with 2787, and Kramnik in third with 2785

No wonder Anand is the world champion.  Anand's peak however is 2803, while Kramnik is even higher at 2809, as if that matters for them.  Cool

Fischer was superior to either of those players. I am quite curious as to the method used to rate top players currently.  I believe that Fischer if rated using current method would exceed 2900. -SIX

Ultimately, there is only one valid way to compare the strength of players, and that is over the board. Since Fischer eschewed the opportunity for that comparison after 1975, such comparisons are purely speculative. For me, Kasparov's grand 15-year reign as World Champion gives him best claim to the mantle of Greatest Living Chessplayer.

Yes, Kasparov is the man, but his political moves are dubious (he's seeking Russia's presidency).  Paul Morphy was also great, although he didn't have any strong opposition in his time...  Undecided

2800 rating is freakin rediculous... i couldn't imagine being rated that high... i mean, how good can you possibly be at chess?!
Ricardo_Morro
Until the last few years, Kasparov could beat any computer made. That's how good.
TheOldReb
Kasparov is so great he only has equal records against both Spassky and the late T Petrosian, two men Fischer destroyed! Smile
Loomis
Reb, how many times did Kasparov face Spassky and Petrosian before he fully blossomed in chess and how many times did he face them in his peak, during his World Champion reign?
TheOldReb
I knew someone would bring that up and I concede Kasparov was not yet at his best when he played those two, however both Spassky and Petrosian were well past their peaks as well.....these factors balance out imo. He also had white in all of his games with Petrosian and thats a big advantage at their level. What if Petrosian had white a couple of times?
Loomis
The point of your original post was to make a specious transitive relation between Kasparov and Fischer. The more differences you find between your transitive link -- as you did in your most recent post -- the weaker your argument becomes.

Well, when Kasparov wins 20 on the trot against all GM players then maybe we can talk about who is the best of the two. I wonder who has the longest win streak against all GMs after Fischer?

Loomis
Kasparov has given simuls against teams of GMs, so I don't know what you're on about.

That is exactly why Fischer is the greatest ever..

It's a pity that many younger players have no chess history sense.

One must study at least the history from the age of Steinitz until now.

If one has no real knowledge of greats such as Capa, Pillsbury, Lasker, Alekhine,Marshall, Spielmann, Janoski, Tarrasch, Chareousak, Schlecter,  Fine, Keres , Bronstein, Rubenstein etc... Then how can one declare a modern great player as the alltime best!??--SIX

if i could have 1 hour of training with any GM in the world it would be anand.
KrizProdigy
i heard that anand is no longer world champion , and its Topalov now ? is that true ?
phantomfears
No that is not true. Anand has just recently won the world title. Kramnick says it is only on loan though lol.

Fischer also shut out two of the best players in the world 6-0 , 6-0 ! This is like pitching back to back no hitters in the world series! Kasparov has done nothing like this. Then Fischer crushes Petrosian , winning 4 games straight against a man considered the hardest in the world to beat. Petrosian wasnt accustomed to losing 4 games a year! Petrosian played black in all 5 games he played against Kasparov, +2 -2 =1 . What if he had a couple of whites in those 5 games?

Reb:  Out of curiosity, where would you say Kasparov fits in the world's greatest? Obviously you have Fischer as number one... would you put Kasparov as number 2? Or would you have him farther down the list?

Re: Anand, classy player, classy guy. My favorite Anand media clips are of him in press conferences after his games with a large demonstration board, and him breaking down 4 hours of his genius into a 30 second blurb... arms whipping the pieces around the board, and giving that blank Anand stare at the press room when he's done to see if there are any questions... before darting off to be back at Aruna's side. He seems to find more comfort just being at his wife's side than touting his own genius in front of a room full of cameras.
