Checkmate Cancer Chess Tournament

Hello Chess.com:

I wanted to post some information regarding an upcoming chess tournament. I run a chess club in Havre de Grace, MD (USA) in Meadowvale Elementary School. One of the participants (Thomas Saacks--3rd grader) was diagnosed with liver cancer in December. In order to do something for him and the family, we are organizing a chess tournament with all proceeds going to the family.

Information about the tournament is on our website with online registration: www.checkmatecancer.com.

The tournament has both a rated and unrated section--so everyone can play.

If you live in this area (or know someone who does), and cannot attend, please help spread the word and help us help make a difference in Thomas' life.

Post any questions in this thread.

Thanks,

Hi, this is Thomas. This was really cool to find over a decade later. Just wanted to say that I remember this event and it was a highlight of my experience during treatment. Thank you. In case anyone else comes across this I might as well let you know that I've been cancer free for over a decade! I play chess from time to time, getting acquainted with this website last year when Chess went viral during the winter. Thanks again, and yeah- I'm doing well, and it was cool to see this. If someone is reading this, I hope you have a good rest of your day!
