One good petty and childish deserves another. evil

But saying "good game" has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the game, and I am dismayed that so many people could fail to understand that. If anything, "good" refers to the quality of the interaction -- but even that is a stretch. In reality, it is a stylized courtesy (like "please" and "thank you") that serves to reinforce our humanity and good will.

Not how I interpret it. Some opponents are genuinely a pleasure to play and my occasional and limited use of "good game" is a reflection of that. Ritually using "good game" all the time has nothing to do with humanity and good will, it's just a meaningless formula.

Speaking of petty, I was thinking of mentioning what an ugly, nasty character I thought you were on the basis of your previous comments, but I showed some restraint. Now, I would just encourage you to go back under your rock, troll.

Unfortunately, you are wrong.

How? Is it engraved on tablets of stone, or some rule and regulation of FIDE, chess.com, or the New York Boxing Commission, that I regard "good game" in your way rather than mine?

Logically, historically, culturally. I will give you one example, and then I will be done with this conversation. Watch any sporting event, at any level, anywhere in the world. At the end of the match, you will see the players line up to shake hands and say, "good game". They do not first assess whether the game was, to their mind, sufficiently "good" to warrant the gesture. Indeed, in the Olympics, refusing to shake the opponent's hand after the match is grounds for suspension from competition. Stop rationalizing your bad behaviour. Courtesy is not meaningless.

Perhaps, but culture is dependant on environment, and in the environment of chess.com it is not the standard thing to do; if nothing else because many people do not read their chat or have it disabled.

Wow, I hope you are fully enjoying your sanctimonious trip.

PS: Actually I am quite a delight IRL. I just can't stand self-righteous "why can't you all jerks be like me" type of people and sometimes come across as somewhat aggravating, sorry about that...

Pointing out that a certain behavior is childish is childish?

Hmm, is this logic childish?

DenialOfNature

I don't talk to my opponents.. never.

since no one ever speaks with good intentions these days.. always bad attitudes..

this is the world that exists today.

Hey People! It's gonna be a new year very soon. Let's all make the commitment to be good sports in 2025 and remember our GG's. Thank you.

I shall try to use that function more often, especially with opponents with whom I may not share a language. And I shall try to type something nice at the end of a good game too. A bit of good manners never did any harm. Thank you for this thread!

navergonnagiveyouup

usually i try to say gg but every now and then when i go on a rating climb i dont do it all the time, but i do notice it quite frequently that very few people actually do say anything in that aspect, so yes, i would also appreciate it if they at least said thanks. btw if you like my profile send me a friends request.

I usually say good game but others do not usually reply. Last time I checked, you are not allowed to refuse to shake hands before and after a game during a tournament.
