19th-century Tsarist Karelian birch chess set from St. Petersburg

How amazing is this antique Soviet chess set made of Karelian birch? The king is 4.3".

I think the birch texture looks so beautiful on these pieces.

And very cool to see the chess king engraving on the knight of such an old set. Does anyone know when this practice started? I would love to see that more in modern chess sets.

“Large and very high-quality chess pieces. On the knight’s head there is an engraving of the chess king. Heavy chess pieces with lead weights. A very rare super set for any collection and certainly the best of all sets made of Karelian birch.”

As far as I know it was Howard Staunton's idea, so I believe it has been implemented since the first chess sets bearing his name. But I would like to hear someone else's opinion.

Nice! A bit peculiar then that this practice hasn’t really been standardized. In terms of modern sets, I know House of Staunton’s Morphy Series Luxury pieces and the Leuchars Series have the king marks, as well as Noj’s Best Chessmen Ever Stage 2 and 3, but it’s such a rarity.

I believe the need for such markings faded with the rise of algebraic notation.
