SOLVED: Rare vintage Vigo, Galicia, Spain set for $20

I stumbled upon a Mystery Vintage chess set for $20. And looked online at many of the usual sites for any similar sets, but came up empty.

For some reason the set's crude Knights give me an early American manufacture vibe. But I've looked through Duncan Pohl’s Vintage American Chess book and don't see it. They look familiar, but I can't put my finger on it.

The carved one-piece Knights are not horse Knights, or dog, cat, or even bird(!) Knights. They look like Chewbacca wookie Knights. LOL Maybe a one-off, hobbyist set or something? Not sure. Any educated (or wild) guesses out there?

UPDATE: These rare vintage chessmen are from Vigo, Galicia, Spain.

Have you attached an image it’s just been of late that seemingly I’m not seeing them. I’m using an iPhone.

That's weird. I've attached 13 images. They all appear fine on my iPhone. Both using the chess.com app and mobile browser.

I’m also on iPhone - and images often do not appear

They do appear when in a web browser however - and I’m sure you posted them correctly

I see them! Neat set, definitely agree on the Chewbacca knight description. I'm on Android and not using the app, just the webpage. I don't care for the app formatting.

Spanish.  @pawnerai Here you go my guy!

On the photos - of late I too have had trouble with the mobile App (iPhone) and have had to view most photos via the browser on my phone. A pain but manageable. As an aside, I have never been able to upload photos via the phone App - only via the browser in my phone or via my laptop. Again, a pain but manageable - I hope chess.com team are trying to patch/fix in the back ground.

I have also had issues too with the iPhone app. This only started after the annoying database error.

That's a nice set....I'm surprised Powderdigit didn't beat you to it.tongue

I like the attitude of the knights happy.png

Very good price for this set! Maybe you should put the knights on a diet happy.png. At first glance they reminded me of the knights of the Spanish set Escardibul especially in the base.

looks creepy, just the way i like it

@beachero Woah. That's 100% the set. The Knights. The proportional height of the pieces. The square form of the King's cross finial. The hole on top of the Rook. Thanks!
An exact match to Post #17 by @UpcountryRain in the link you posted. HERE.  Ay caramba! I was way off by 3,000 miles.

It was purchased from a seller in Pennsylvania. The only history being, the set was "from the collection of a Chess Digest staff member."

On a side note, I'm gonna do some experimenting with the photos in the original post. It's definitely an issue with the chess.com iPhone app. Yesterday afternoon, the 13 photos were appearing fine for me on: desktop browser, mobile iPhone browser, and iPhone chess.com app. Yesterday evening, I updated the iPhone chess.com app. And now the photos no longer appear on the iPhone chess.com app. The 13 photos appear fine on my desktop browser and mobile iPhone browser. So annoying.

UPDATE: Looks like the iPhone chess.com app is limited to displaying 4 hi-res photos per forum post(?). I was adding the photos one by one. And they were displaying fine on the iPhone chess.com app. Once I got to 5 photos. They all did not appear anymore. Bandwidth limit on the iPhone app? Have no idea. What a pain.

For some reason the set's crude Knights give me an early American manufacture vibe. They look familiar, like I've seen them once before. But I can't put my finger on it. No box. All pieces are weighted and were felted at one point.

Definitely not a new set. All the pieces are made out of wood. I have a set from 1940's that is also made out of wood, but not similar to this.
