APPLE M1 - Chessbase - DGT Board

Sort:
ChessElk

Maybe someone of you has experience with the following combination:
- Apple M1
- Parallels
- Chessbase / Fritz
- DGT Board (USB and/or bluetooth) - VERY IMPORTANT
I have searched in many forums, but have not found anything.
Even the manufacturers could not give me a satisfactory answer.

Primarily I want to train offline with chessbase. Online should work well with DGT/chess.com, I've read.
Thanks for your support

I do not have a Mac computer, but if you have usb/bluetooth connection, it works offline, so you can play with Fritz that is included with the dgt set. Sorry if I misundertsood your question.

Nice of you to reply. To run Chessbase or Fritz on a Mac, you need Parallels, a so-called Windows emulator. The question now is whether the above mentioned COMBINATION of all components works together.

@chesselk the M1 Macs are ARM based CPUs.  You can not run an x86 operating system on an ARM processor even a virtual machine.

You would need to run the ARM based version of Windows on your M1 Mac and hope for: 1) Windows ARM to provide x86 emulation (they have tried for years unsuccessfully to create a Rosetta-like experience) or 2) Software developers to provide an ARM version of their software.

I have an M1 Mac as well.  I keep my intel MacBook for running Chessbase and Fritz.   I also use HIARCS on my Mac.  For my DGT board I use a Raspberry Pi running PicoChess.  In fact, I'm working on PicoChess NG.

... or if you have Synology NAS you can install VM with windows on it and use Remote Desktop to access it from your local network or anywhere in the world from any based computer. Powerful and flexible solution IMO.

@BrianErdelyi keep up us posted with your PicoChess NG development.

@ogouriev I have a demo I want to create a video of.  It is part 3D printing project and part chess GUI software.  I need to setup a camera to show the demo.

@BrianErdelyi and @ogouriev
Thanks to both of you for answering my question in detail.

@BrianErdelyi:
One more question for understanding. In addition to the M1 I have an old MacBook Pro (15 inch, mid 2010). If I install a Windows 10 / Fritz / Chessbase with bootcamp on the old Mac, can I also use the DGT board?

ogouriev

consider Fusion or Parallels on your old MacBook instead of bootcamp ... more convenient, unless you are going to dedicate the whole computer, then go for bootcamp. Use RabbitPlugin for DGT board connection.

VMware or Parallels is more convenient.  Yes, I had the DGT board working like that.

@BrianErdelyi

This is good news. Then I will use my old Mac for it.

@chesselk a brief update.  I was just reading that Windows 11 ARM has a built-in x86 emulator.  So, I downloaded Parallels and Windows 11 ARM.  I have it running on my Apple M1 MacBook Pro.

I installed Fritz 14 that came with my DGT board.  I'll test with my DGT board next to see what happens.  I'll let you know.

@BrianErdelyi : Good luck. This would be the optimal solution for all M1 users. Thank you.

LiveChess installed and board appears to be recognised.  Pieces recognized.

Gonna try playing a game with Fritz.

Good news is I am playing against Fritz using my DGT board.  I'm using an M1 Mac with Windows 11 ARM and Fritz in Parallels desktop.

Thank you so much. 👏👍🙏

Amazing work! Did you try the DGT board with chess.com or Lichess with your M1? Does it work without using Paralells?

Bonus question, how fast is the M1 to analyze your games here on Chess.com? Is it slower than any other x86 laptop?

(Considering M1Pro, hate Windows)

Thanks in advance happy.png

I understand that Fritz seems to be working on an M1 Mac, which is great. What about Chessbase 16? Has anybody tried this via Parallels and Windows 11 ARM? If yes, how is the user-experience? Fast enough or slow as molasses? Thanks for your feedback!

I have never used Chessbase or Fritz. I have been using the latest version of HIARCs (HIARCs Pro). It is useful for organizing games, has its own engine (Deep HIARCs) and other engines can be added for analysis. I’ve successfully added Stockfish and Dragon by Komodo. All run natively on an M1 Mac. I have also gotten this system to work with a Millennium eboard. Just though you might like to be aware there are other options.

I had Fritz working above in Windows ARM.  The light Chess DB included with Fritz worked fine.  I imagine Chessbase would work find as well.
