Chessconnect: a free chrome extension for electronic chessboards

If someone manages to find any pattern when these slips happen. That would be extremely helpful. Maybe it' dragging the pieces at a certain speed or at a specific height over the board. Or misplacing a piece and then correcting. Or electromagnetic interference. Or really fast moves. If we mange to find the cause, I can and will fix it.

P.S.: I do not blame DGT. It's most likely me handling these boards not 100% correctly.

Keep up the great work!

Just to note and confirm that Chessconnect works as expected on ChromeOS/Chromebooks!

Also, a couple of potential requests from me if possible πŸ™:

  • An option for the "Connect" button to be an icon when the chess.com menu bar is "collapsed" so that it fits with the site aesthetics better (I normally have the sidebar collapsed)
  • An option for the extension to be available for Microsoft Edge. I'm hoping that as Edge is based off Chromium, it shouldn't be too difficult?! The reason for this is I actually do my screen capture recordings of the chess.com board using Edge rather than Chrome as on Windows, chess.com animations seems to run more smoothly (consistent 60 fps).

I think it works in edge, no?

I played three games flawlessly in Lichess today two of them being over forty moves. So that is much better than it has worked before. I did have an initial headache and had to create a new token as I was getting error messages and the board was not being recognised. So far, so good and that is on my aging macbook.

Thanks.

I just wanted to comment that I haven't had any issues with moves not registering in chess.com puzzles since I started using the Kiwi browser on my phone instead of Chrome on my Linux desktop. I'm guessing the issues I was experiencing have something to do with the Bluetooth implementation on Linux, since that probably hasn't been tested as much.

Sure it does. It's even in the Microsoft Edge Store.

@joernupbde

v4.3.4 works like a charm and things look fine with the Tabutronic. Both on Chess dotcom and on Lichess. In a nutshell, fantastic version indeed, Chessconnect is getting better and better. And the italian translation is more precise and a lot nicer than ever before. Thanks and keep up the good work !

joernupbde

Thank you so much @Kromok2! That's really nice to read. happy

One user correctly reported that sometimes the move delay does not work correctly. For instance, a move where a bishop is dragged over the board might be sent to the website too early. Even if sufficent move delay is set.

This is now fixed in version 4.3.8beta. I expect this version to move over to the stable channel in about a week or so.

Hello,

Great extension! It makes me believe I can use my DGT board! I have had trouble with chess.com recognizing king moves, but was using an older version of the chrome browser. I'm not sure why that would matter, but I just updated it and will try again. In a nutshell, no king moves at all were recognized on a MacBook air m2 running an older version of Chrome with 4.34 ChessConnect on chess.com. Will try again. Coffee is incoming, I'm surehappy.png

I just played a game and king moves were not recognized. The "announce move" feature didn't work. I also added Chrome extensions, while playing, which are supposed to announce the moves and neither of those worked.

montagdude

If I may request a feature: I like to play in "Zen mode"/"Focus mode" where player ratings are hidden. This works on chess.com, but last I tried on Lichess, Zen mode gets rid of the Chessconnect button. There's another setting on Lichess called "Hide player ratings," and this works fine with Chessconnect, but it's inconvenient because it hides all ratings from the site, including your stats when you're not playing. It would be nice if Chessconnect were compatible with Zen mode. I understand that it may not be possible, though, due to how Zen mode is implemented. Also, this should probably be low priority if it's not easy.

joernupbde

I didn't know that lichess had a zen mode. I'll look into it and I am optimistic that this can be solved.

ConnorWolfGorby

Hello,

I wrote the other day about some difficulty with chess connect and and older DGT USB board, but it appears all has been mysteriously solved.

The king moves work.

Castling works.

The voice is working.

It's great! Coffee is incoming!!

ConnorWolfGorby

Hello!

Everything is working great with the voice move announcements. The only thing is that it doens't say "long castle". Is that fixable?

Thanks so much!

joernupbde

Thanks for the coffee/tea! What does it say instead of "long castle"? I am pretty sure that this can be fixed.

ChocoolateMilk

Hello ! Certabo user here, chessconnect work perfectly fine with the USB & bluetooth connection. Thank you for the effort you've made to the whole chess community.

May I ask a question : would you please add a "no voice" option ? I mainly play at midnight after kids slept and don't want to disturb anybody with the win/lose announcement.

I tried to lower the sound volume but it does not affect the voice announcement.

joernupbde

@ChocolateMilk: You can select "no sound" in the options (see screenshot). Maybe there is something wrong with my Chinese translation? I am happy to correct, if neccessary.

ChocoolateMilk

@joernupbde this can control the sound after a move, but cannot control the voice announcement after finished the game. (for example: White wins , Black wins)

joernupbde

In future versions, these will be linked together. So, no more voice announcements of any kind, if turned off in the options. If I remember correctly this is already implemented in the current beta. So, you can either use the beta or wait for the beta to become official.

OutOfCheese

I ordered deez chessnuts go and will soon be joining the testing for this, can't wait!
