Chessconnect: a free chrome extension for electronic chessboards

Here's another log, the "funny stuff" happens just after the game. Hanging at 2/4, going to 4/4, I reconnect manually. The whole thing happens 2 times and at the 2nd manual reconnect it finally connects the board.

Not sure how to boost my signal, the bluetooth dongle is at 90cm of the board. I have "trusted" the board a while back so it's a known device to the system (not sure if that even matters).

Btw audio works just fine the whole time, I put on some music deliberately just to see if it lags/distorts while stuff is happening with the board.

For quite some time now, I have been contemplating the idea of a universal chess clock for Chessconnect. A physical chess clock that takes the players times from chess.com or lichess and frees me from having to look at the web site at all. Very much like the DGT3000 works now. But this clock should work with all boards and not just one brand.

So, I reached out to Zmartfun because this is the clock I use for my private games. And it turns out that they could be interested in developing an extra "Chessconnect module" for their clocks provided there are enough Chessconnect users out there who would potentially buy it.

So, this is the question: is it just me or are there others like me who feel like an electronic chess board needs a real chess clock, too? The price for the module would probably be around 25$. Plus the clock, of course.

I'm in :-)

Game changer. Yes, I would definitely buy.

I'd be all in for it.

The clock would be fantastic, I think I and others would snap this up!

montagdude

Count me in too!

Yep, definitely need a physical clock, having to look at the screen is annoying, having a clock behind the opponent pieces would improve the experience a lot. Are we talking about the Zmartfun II? How would it work, buy the clock, buy the module, slam the module in by myself?

The clock will also read the time corrections from chess.com, yeah?

montagdude

I'm also interested to know how connecting it would work. Would the module be bluetooth and require its own "connect" operation during the game, or would it somehow happen automatically when you connect the board?

It's all still to be done. The clock will reflect the clocks from lichess/chess.com as closely as possible. Since the data transfer will take some time the clocks might occasionally differ a second or two. But I will try my best to compensate. Pairing needs to be done separately. But only once. Since the feedback here is positive, Zmartfun will most likely build a prototype and I will be able to provide more details and probably post a video.

If you need any help testing, give me a shout. More than happy to help with that (as I am sure many others are).

I'd also be willing to test (not looking for a "free sample" I'm willing to pay as long as the money goes towards a final product in the end).

A few seconds time difference isn't a big deal to me, I think bullet/sub 3 min blitz aren't good formats for eBoards anyways. Since the ultimate time control is on the CC server I assume we almost never get to see the actual time anyways.

I have some electronics soldering experience so I'd be able to fiddle with an earlier prototype.

Ubuntu 24.04.1, Chrome 129.0.6668.100 (Official Build) (64-bit), same chessconnect version

No more lag so it must have been some bad config in my old system (I tend to do the upgrade path, the 22.04 was upgraded from 20.04 and the 24.04 is upgraded from the 22.04, maybe time for a clean install soon).

Sorry if this has come up before. When I play on Lichess all works really well but then suddenly my moves don't register. I try reconnecting pressing the green connect button but this doesn't work.

I'm using the Air on windows 11 and MS edge.

How does chessconnect work on Edge I don't get it.

I was under the impression that it's a Chrome extension.

Oh I see, you can use Chrome extension in ms edge. In Chrome some settings have to be changed to allow experimental bluetooth things in the browser, could be the same for Edge (but don't ask me how to do it ). Look on the chessconnect site to see what has to be done in Chrome
