Chessconnect: a free chrome extension for electronic chessboards

Your app is wonderful. Have been able to get eOne and DGT smartboard interfacing with .com bots just fine.

BUT, I cannot get the Tournament 55 board to work. Chessconnect recognizes the BT from the chesslink, but it will not finish the connection. I get a timeout error.

I'm on a macbook air. It's a mystery since it works with the two other bords. Any ideas? Thanks!

@pdxchessman: Thank you for your kind words! The T55 not connecting is strange. I use this board frequently for my own games with a MacBook pro. I just checked that this does indeed work.

I assume that you tried the original Millennium Chesslink app and that this setup works?

Can you send me a short video of your connection process including a screenshot of your Chessconect options dialog?

Hi Joernupbde:

User error on my part. I was using a 5v Millenium power adapter instead of the required 9v with the chesslink (the look the same). The 9v adapter has solved all issues--the board powers, pairs and connects just fine with .com. I'm now able to use the 55 with your app to play the bots! I was also really pleased to see that the app also works with a usb c connection from the DGT smartboard into my mac-air. Your app is really versatile and incredibly useful. Many thanks!

Looking forward to use this directly through the Millennium Phoenix module

The Phoenix should receive the 4.4.6 update soon, too. I submit new versions to Millennium whenever I update the regular version. But it takes a couple of days for the Millennium testing team to verify my work.

Hi joernupbde, thank you so much for the extension.

I bought my Chessnut Air on Wednesday and it worked flawlessly with chessconnect until today. I'm not sure if it's an error related to the newest Chrome version (131.0.6778.109 in my case).

The LEDs start blinking randomly on squares after a piece leaves.

I get these errors constantly in the console:
2024-12-07 17:38:24.956: results in move: undefined, move.player=undefined, player=1

This happens both on lichess and in chess.com, and I've tried on a Mac and on PC.

When using the Chessnut app on iPad or iPhone it works without issues.

I also tried resetting the board with a toothpick but it doesn't solve the issue.

Hope this helps in case someone else starts reporting the same issue.

Cheers!

@Jaquedu: can you send me a full console log?

And please double check that there is no interference from the Chessnut app.

Jaquedu

Hey Jörn, thank you for looking into the problem!

I've sent the log to the email address that is shown on your site's Impressum.

Cheers!

Jaquedu

I just wanted to mention here that I've been in contact with Jörn through emails and he helped me fix my issue. He received my logs and went through them and reached a solution.

It had nothing to do with the Chessconnect extension, I was probably using the board close to many electronic devices and that caused some kind of interference.

I followed his advice and placed the board somewhere with fewer electronic devices and is working perfectly now.

THANK YOU Jörn!!

Best keep the boards away from metallic objects too. Some tables and desks have steel frames or fixings and they can cause problems too.
Great that you got sorted.

Forgive this dumb question after such a long time, but is the putpose of this extension purely to use various boards online directly through a desktop Pc? My Chessnut board already works fine with their Android app via my phone, but is this extension so people who do not use smartphones can still use the board online?

Is there anything I would gain from using this system instead of using the Chessnut supplied apps?

I use it mainly so that I can be on the full site and play a game easily. Easier (for me) to start a game on the web than in the app.

If I am on the web in a browser and my opponent challenges me (usually in tournaments as I rarely just play random games anymore), it is easy to start the game directly.

It also affords you a bigger screen, so it is easier to see the online board, if necessary; easier to see your time left; etc.

In addition, I never had a lot of luck with the apps (all boards), I have not tried them in a while so perhaps they are better now, but it is so easy to use the extension, and I have it on all my computers and laptops.

But this is my opinion only (YMMV) and you know what they say about opinions ....

Good to know, Dr Gehring! My Phoenix is currently downloading the firmware right now.

Should I mention my experiences with your work through the Phoenix on this thread, or should I move it somewhere else?

That is of course your choice. But maybe it is a good idea to start a new thread for Chessconnect on the Phoenix. It is a slightly different piece of software after all.

joernupbde

I am pleased to announce that I have started a Chessconnect YouTube channel. The idea is to create a series of short videos explaining different aspects of Chessconnect that frequently come up in this forum.

The first video is a short introduction of Chessconnect and can be found here.

(I am a way better developer than a content creator. So, please be kind...)

Hi,

On Android (kiwi browser) i get: "Chessconnect
This Browser does not support the Web Serial API".

If I go to on computer my board is recognize by the computer and DGT software, however connecting remains on connecting 3/3 on chess.com. I see that it is trying to connect to 2 ports. Shouldn't this be one?

Yesterday it managed to work for a few minutes.

Whats going on?

Thank you!

joernupbde

@TheHakushu: Unfortunately, DGT eBoards (except for the Pegasus) don't work on Android. (see compatibility chart on my web page).

These boards use Bluetooth classic instead of Bluetooth LE. And that is not available in Kiwi on Android.

What a shame..I guess this is not something that can be resolved with software in the near future. Pretty frustrating for a fool that owns 2 DGT boards. On PC with USB it works flawlessly. With BT I have a lot of connections problems. Not sure its the Chessconnection because DGT bluetooth seems to be very unstable.
