Excellent-Value All-in-One Staunton Starter Kit (A&A Chess)

I sometimes buy stuff I don't REALLY need (Okay, I do that all the time), and I was just intrigued by this all-in-one chess kit, so:

This is a public service announcement : If you're looking for a sturdy, all-inclusive chess outfit that includes everything you need (and some things you don't need) to start out, look no further than this "A&A Chess Equipment" set of quadruple-weighted, tournament-sized (3.75") classic Staunton chessmen from Amazon ($45 or €45, available in the US and Europe) that comes with a 2.25" square-size silicone roll-up board, a pair of velvety pouches for the chessmen, and a compact, decent-quality carrying case. Kings are 65g, e.g.

On top of that you'll get a basic rule book (including pointers on openings), a set of self-adhesive stickers that serve no purpose whatsoever, and a postcard so you can tell your friends or family in the old-fashioned way that you're now playing chess.

Wisely, both pieces and board are matte finish, and the chessmen are very good quality, with unobtrusive molding seams that put HoS's Hastings and Marshall sets to shame. The pieces are made of HIPS, which means high impact polystyrene, so they can take a few beatings. The weighting and point of gravity are ideal. The set even follows the, IMHO stupid, "four pawns" rule. The edges on all the pieces, incl. the queens' crowns, are blunt, so you won't scratch your fingers.

I ordered this all-in-one outfit as a fluke, but I'm actually delighted about the quality as such, and the amount of thought that went into putting it all together.

The four pawns per square rule is obeyed:

Nice! Thanks for posting. It looks to be a good value and the design looks good too.

a bit off-topic, but in the German amazon reviews of this set, there are people who have no idea why they got *two* queens of each color :-D

Yeah. When I sold some of my sets over eBay Classifieds, people asked what the two extra queens are for. wink.png

Looks like a great set! Thanks for posting!

For me, the thing which takes this set over the line is the stickers. Outstanding!

I don't know why Jacques doesn't do them. 😉

Where is this shipped from in Europe?
Did you have to pay any taxes or other import fees on it?

I have these, too. I bought them a year ago. Just the pieces, as they didn't have the whole set then. And I also didn't need them, but I thought they were so much nicer than other plastic sets that I found. They are still one of my favourite sets.

i do see how much you want for them what do you want in us funds to have them shipped to me

They have two queens because in tournaments if you wanted to promote a pawn to a second queen you could do that, because this is a “tournament” chess board, I recommend getting a clock to go with it.
