Yeah, it makes sense. Thanks again for all the information, Audioq!
Henri Chavet Guide
Knights looks chavet , the wood looks from Jura. I will say chavet size 4 , looks it has been painted .
Morize was a toy distributor that joint with chavet in the 90's. The label on box is old one. It could be all set from 80-90. It is a nice gem.
I just added 101/0 and 153/8 missing from…
Hello,
Is there anyone who could talk to me about this numbers ? I would love to.
I hope to post more pictures before next Friday.
I would like to thank all the contributors who share their passion, their knowledge ;-)
Congratz! I think who wrote that label made a typo? I can't find anything about 156/8, I think it should be 153/8. Do you know the KH?
I don't have them in hand yet, but if the Lady is nearly 10cm tall, the King is very likely to be at least 11cm. In a few days, I will be sure 😇
Hi guys... I just bough this set that suppose to be a Chavet, not sure because other sets like Europa's are so similar and it does not have any label at the box, only the inscription at the front, but it does mean that the pieces are Chavets . I'm attaching a couple of photos. I really appreciate if you can help me to identify it.
Thanks!
Hello Elecnodo. Nice set indeed. And yes, it's definitely a Chavet set.
To help identify it, we need some measurements to the King's height. From the pictures, it looks like the pieces are not felted?
@Animaitor thanks to let it me know... It is correct it is not felted. Further I'll post the measurements.
Judging by the proportions and features it looks to be a smaller Chavet set. I'm guessing, 7cm/2.75" King.
I am mostly collecting antique sets, but from time to time I am tempted by a modern set, like in this case. If I am not mistaken, this should be a 141/2 Chavet set (king size 69 mm, felted, but unweighted) on a Chavet board.
Nice ;-)
Yes, 141/2 (Seite 44) and (Seite 50) on this link : https://www.latourdujouet.fr/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/1catalogue-2014-optimal.pdf
Thank you so much for sharing the video Audioq! I don't understand french fully but I can definitely see the moment where they are working on a knight. Since we don't see the whole process, I don't know what to say... maybe they are machine made for most of the steps but not all or maybe not for all the series they produce. I know the hair of my B-212 knights are definitely hand carved as they look very rough, uneven and different from each other. If this was done mechanically all the pieces would look if not the same, very similar and that's not the case on with my set.
The B212 is a very old set. I think the knights of that set may have been hand carved, at least partially. This is probably why Chavet eliminated the eyes and manes over the years - to minimise manual intervention. There are still videos today on Facebook showing a guy operating a machine to cut the round, machine turned Kings crosses to flat on either side. I wouldn't describe this as carving or even turning though. Also like a car the machines would need to be replaced every number of years and may be slightly different from the previous ones. For me the beauty of the Chavet sets are in the design, not the execution. By any objective measure Chavet sets were always a bit rough/rustic, but the form is simply wonderful!
