Is this set a Henri Chavet one?? Someone can help me to identify it, please?? I can send more pics if needed, thanks!! (My grandfather bought it circa 1940's)
Henri Chavet Guide
@Pazuzu107 It does not look Chavet or French to me. Based on the large collar/small head bishop, it looks German or south American (Brazil has a rich chess set making history). Since you are in Brazil, you may consider posting to https://www.facebook.com/groups/603874686964478/?ref=share. I’m not great with wood species, but that is probably a clear clue.
Hello,
I was planning on selling one of my Chavet sets to someone who is also a collector. The reason to sell is that I am saving for an apartment so I would be ready to hand it to someone who appreciates it's value. In the following days I would be posting few detailed photos, so please contact me by PM if you are interest. Only serious offers please. It is a Vintage Chavet Nr. 6.
Regards, Niko
I was wondering when the Chavet sets were first introduced? I know the Lardy sets were much earlier. I have a small Lardy set from the 50's that I inherited from my grandfather. That set is one that was imported and sold in the US by Cavalier. I have the Chavet set on my radar now, but I am not sure what year they first appeared. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
@crocorrespondent Do you have a photo of the box exterior with label? Do you have a price in mind? Or are you just fishing for bids to get top dollar. If you want top dollar, eBay is the best way to go. You'll get much more exposure on eBay. It will be worth it even with the extra fees.

1912 for the first. Concerning the displayed model, it must date from around mid 1980.

@Pawnerai, no the box does not have a label. Chavet sold their sets under their own name and supplied other retailers, SAC, Roland, Didatto etc. so most sets will not have a Chavet box but are unmistakably Chavet sets.
@crocorrespondent This is yours right? https://www.ebay.com/itm/145014716141 If so good luck with the auction.
Yes it is. Thanks a lot!
Hello everyone,
I am writing this post to inform you that I have been the victim of a scam, and to warn you so that it does not happen to you.
The scammer is a seller called Wilson Levy, who lives in Agon Containville, France.
He currently sells through his shop "castorshopping" (when I bought it it was called "beavershopping") although he previously had another one called regencechess or something similar, which may have closed down due to some other fraudulent action.
As I had his contact details, I asked him about some chavet pieces he was offering, according to him, king size 9.3 cm. I made the payment, and he sent the pieces, which turned out to have a 9 cm king (I find it incredible that someone who sells chavet pieces does not see the difference in size with the naked eye, and check it, but I understand that we can all make mistakes).
When I contact him and tell him that I want to return the pieces, and that, because of this mistake, he should pay the shipping costs. His first response is not to agree to refund the money, and to play down the difference (I find it incredible for someone who collects and sells parts), but finally he confirms that he agrees and says he will reimburse me for everything.
I send the parts, but when he receives them, he refuses to pay the shipping costs, both there and back, in breach of his promise. After several emails, in which he refuses to pay them, I tell him not to be a scammer, and then he takes offence and refuses to refund any money at all, unless I apologise, and that he will not pay the postage in any case. Of course, I don't think I have to apologise to a thief and I didn't. In the end he refunded me some of the money.
In the end he refunded me some of the money, but refuses to take responsibility.
Total money ripped off €44.
Be very careful with this thief. He is useless and if there is any problem (generated by him or not), he will try to take your money.
I have already filed a complaint against him at my local police station.
p.s. He put the pieces up for sale again and again indicated that the king measured 9.3cm, which can no longer be attributed to a mistake, but to a deliberate act of deceiving the buyer to increase the price.
I am mostly collecting antique sets, but from time to time I am tempted by a modern set, like in this case. If I am not mistaken, this should be a 141/2 Chavet set (king size 69 mm, felted, but unweighted) on a Chavet board.
I haven't been able to find a board like this anywhere, I see it was listed as CH1957 in a catalog posted. Any advice on finding one? I like the compact setup and the recessed playing area.
Again, I am waiting for an email answer from Jurabuis, but I have very very little hope.
If you have any recent news, please tell !
This is the end :

JuraBuis has gone bankrupt, it's true. But Chavet still exists, although it does not manage to supply the market with new sets…
Not sure which is the right Chavet thread on which to ask this since there are a few, so I'll post here and let the mods sort it out.
I've read good things here about Rouge et Noire in Paris as a source for Chavet (or "Chavet" given the uncertain status of the company?). I really like the blind knight style, and R&N has them unfelted in size 6. While I'd prefer them in a bit more figured wood, that would probably mean a vintage set and perhaps out of my budget -- also, I'm still not positive I know what model number I'd be looking for. Based on the set I'm looking at, what would be a good eBay/Etsy search term if I wanted to find a vintage set in that size and style? Thx.
Thanks for summarizing; that was really helpful. And yeah, the light pieces that I've seen here in some folks' sets, vintage or "new" (and I'm still a little sketchy on the new vs. repro thing going on with whatever's happening at the Chavet company that either does or does not exist anymore and either is or is not making pieces anymore), are just so beautiful that I may not find what I'm looking for without actually being someplace and putting my hands on them.
Over the last few years my collection has grown faster than was reasonable, but I'm somewhere between very pleased and overjoyed with every. single. set. so really my only regret is that I don't play with some of them as often as I should (and because of when I got some of them, three sets have never been played OTB, so that kinda sucks). But a set of size six Chavets with blind knights has turned into my Rosebud/Holy Grail/unicorn. It was a set of Noj Dubs, but I got a (barely) used set of beautiful Indian repro 70s Dubs here on CB&E, and I love them so much that I gave up immediately on ever finding a Noj set in my budget. Now it's Chavets that get my fixation.
(I've found a few 101/2 sets on eBay and if I didn't already have more library/analysis sets than I can play, I'd snap them up, but I gotta hold out for size six. Gotta. Maybe. #willpowerfading)
Large ball top Queen and blind Knights. That is indeed a new, modern Chavet size 6. Upon close examination, if all the pieces are straight. Count your blessings. Hah! Love those swirls. No Indian reproduction will have that.
I totally agree with this, the proof:
I mentioned in another thread that these Chavet size 6 sets are still in production, but another member contradicted me and said it was not true.
The operation of Chavet is a little more complicated than that, and it's safe to say that both are right. Jurabuis made all the parts and resold them, except for the knights that Chavet produced for Jurabuis. The 6 were discontinued several times, because of the boxwood disease, because of the covid (resellers did not replenish their stock for fear of confinement and the impossibility of reselling them), then the bankruptcy of Jurabuis...). Mr. Chavet confirmed to me that he wanted to try to continue the adventure, but the situation of Jurabuis penalized him enormously. Since then, games N°6 can be found from time to time at certain retailers.
If you purchased the Chess Empire reproduction, it is based off of the Chavet B210. It is a Chavet Size 6, but a slightly different style. It'll be nice to see your comparison nonetheless. Start a new thread so it doesn't get buried. Good luck!
Personally I don't like the reproductions, I find them too far from the original game (153/6). Especially the knight who should look like this. But I understand that we can enjoy them.
Here is another 156/6 that I also love, with its imperfections and the years passing by.
