Just picked up a Heuer Chess Clock from the 80's

Just wanted to share one of my new pick-ups!  Was telling one of my customers that I am trying to collect a selection of old chess clocks.

He started laughing and told me one of his older players at his club just brought in come old analog chess clocks that he had no use for.  I traded him some equipment for them sight unseen and this is what I got...a Heuer in the box with the instructions and a Roland Chess Clock.

The Heuer is in exceptional shape with the kind of wear you'd normally see on a chess clock from that era.  He had written his name on the clock in sharpie, but that came off with a touch of nail polish remover.  It is the earlier one with the Metal red buttons instead of the plastic ones. What do you think?

thanks

Shelby

Coincidentally, I was just searching for a Heuer chess clock. It's been on my wantlist for a while. HOS/ChessAntiques has one in stock for $595. Too rich for my blood sad.png

It might be worthwhile to bring the chess clock to a watchmaker for a look over. The internals may need servicing. A watch/clock repair shop will have that Heuer purring like new.

As an avid watch collector in a previous life, a Heuer chess clock would've looked right at home on my computer desk here. If it runs well, with box and papers, market value is in the $500-650 range.

@ShelbyLohrman   Even if I got you drunk on cheap rum, I'm sure the price wouldn't be in my ball park. That's an easy $500 bill on eBay all day long thumbup.png

If I'm not mistaken, it's a jerger clock. It's rebranded as Tag Heuer just for resale. I happened to read that somewhere when researching for a clock I just bought, Jerger Chess Champion happy.png

Shelby's early model Heuer chess clock was made by Looping (Switzerland). If you zoom in on Shelby's first image you will see the words, "SWISS FAB. LOOPING" on the face. The later model Heuer chess clock was made by Jerger (Germany). The less desirable German made Jerger/Heuer chess clock is shown below:

Ah learned something new, thanks mister Pawn! I stand corrected. It's interesting fact, I just looked it up

Howard,

Clocks like that sell fast to my customers.  I think I had it a total f 2 weeks before someone paid me 30% over what I asked for it.  Always nice to have multiple people begging for the same clock.

thanks,

Shelby

A similar clock seems to be listed here. Name is different, it’s a Looping?
Are these clocks that rare?

Yup,

That is a Heuer.  They were expensive to start with.  In the 80's and early 90's they were right around $100.  In today's money they would have cost around $140-150 each.

The company eventually merged with another company and focused on making wristwatches.  You can see Tag Heuer watches all over the place now.  They can cost up to $15K for the right one! (watch not chess clock).

I've got an Heuer Chess Champion in mint condition with the original box and instruction booklet. Before I put it eBay I thought maybe best to post here. If anyone is interested let me know. I live in California so shipping can be calculated from here to wherever you are.

Pawnerai

I'll bite. What price did you have in mind? Shipping to NY.

A gem!

That's got to be the most beautiful thing to ever come from the 1980s.

I'm currently asking $599, as that is the price I found on a couple of sites (although neither had one in stock.) I'm the original owner (I believe I bought it around 1973 or 74 but can't be sure) and used it only occasionally for a couple of years for tournament play. I never used it for speed chess. It's been the box since then and really is in perfect condition. I can send more photos or a video of it working if anyone wants.

It is a classy piece!

Hello!

Not a chess player myself but I inherited this exact clock in excellent condition and original packaging. No instruction booklet however. I found this post in my search to sell the clock so if anyone is interested I'm available to negotiate!

It all depends on your minimum asking price and if it's also $599

I'm looking to start between $500-$599, it will all depend on the quickness of the sale

Some weeks ago I purchased one in for 65 Swiss Francs. I think the shop owner estimated the price according to a similar clock sold recently in Ricardo (a kind of Swiss EBay) for this price.

Today I was checking Ricardo and found again the clock for 55 Swiss Francs!  Now I have two! I have also two Solora clocks which I purchased in flea markets for 15 or 20 Swiss Francs. Only later I found out that they are collectible.

Actually it was 52 Swiss francs 😊

Great finding, congratulations!

I have a funny story to tell. I was in a junk shop, trying to find about this specific clock, and I came to your thread. When I heard that the clock is rare and quite expensive I purchased it. I payed only  65 Swiss francs. It is in good condition.

Some weeks later I found in an eBay-like website (Ricardo) another one, this time for only 52 Swiss francs. The first with box, the second without.

I have a vingage Heuer Chess Championclock with origanal box and paperwork I'd like to sell. Is anyone interested?
