Official FIDE Chess Set

So Fide claim that this set is Greek inspired?...

King-  Looks like a Dubrovnik queen

Queen- Looks like a Dubrovnik king

Bishop- A BCC bishop after being hit on the knop with a frying pan

Knight- Romanian knight carved with an ice cream scoop

Rook- Poor mans Chavet

Pawn- depositphotos_115429800-stock-illustration-ufo-icon-on-white-background.jpg

So essentially a hodgepodge of many different styles rolled into one.

You could bring that polemic kind of criticism against any chess set. The pawns in the Dubrovnik set look like Jabba the Hut, the Dubrovnik bishop looks like a child wearing a bobble cap, the queen looks like some vandals broke off the crown, 1850 Staunton knights look like they have weight management issues, soviet knights generally look like the monster of Loch Ness, the Reykjavik rook looks like someone put up billboards on top, etc. Easy to come up with that kind of stuff.

And the reason why Fide doesn't use the World Championship set somewhere else might be .. because it's the World Championship set?

Your perception is fully wrong. This is a luxury chess set. There is a meaning to it. It is used at three occasions if I am not wrong - Grand Prix, Candidates, and World Championship. Both GP and Candidates are made of 8 players - 4 boards and sets. Of course it will not be used at FIDE world cup because there is an elimination system and there are so many players at the begining of competition. Check prices at DGT site - Timeless chess pieces cost much less and therefore they are standard.

Who cares? What matters is that you like it. I happen to agree with you. It’s a very nice set. I’m pretty sure I’ll eventually buy a copy.

You are very right my friend, and I thank you for that happy.png

If someone wants this set but doesnt want to overpay and isnt bothered by packaging

I suggest those guys from royalchessmail, bought from them on 3 occasions, every time there was maximum satisfaction!

Yeah, but it is a reproduction which means it is a cheaper quality set, isn't it?

The two immediate differences I see are that the white pieces have black felts, unlike the originals, where the white pieces have white felts. The other difference, mentioned in the description, is that, unlike the originals, the repros DO NOT function on DGT boards. Other than that, the pieces appear to be a faithful copy. Of course, one would have to handle them to see if workmanship is satisfactory. But, for less than half the price of the originals, this set might be well worth buying.

BonTheCat

Still can't get over how ugly this set is. Just like the EGT board pieces, it lacks everything a proper set should have. The designs of both the FIDE set and the EGT board set are too top heavy, and lack grace. The knights look awful with that stylized mane, and are unfortunately just a tweek of a design type which has been around for nearly 30 or 40 years, and shows no sign of being phased out. I don't think this cookie-cutter knight design is particularly ugly in itself, but it's unimaginative (probably developed for the sake of production expediency, cutting down the carving element to an absolute minimum), and considering the price you pay for many of the sets which have them, I can't help feeling the buyer is being conned.

One may quibble with various chess set designs of old, but nearly early all of them have one thing in common, they have proportions which give them an intrinsic beauty and harmony, even though each specific design may not necessarily appeal to everyone's taste. EGT and FIDE sets lack both of these qualities.

Of course, it isnt genuine. However if you like design you cannot go wrong. Only visible difference is they use black felt for both white and black pieces. Original set has white felt for white pieces.

The original Fide Championship set which comes inside its original box is a very nice chess set and very suitable for playing purposes. The cheap and fake copy of this set which comes without the original box is very badly made. The knights of the fake copy have small bases and the heads are also small and badly done. Also the rooks of the fake copies are different and look very average and cheap. Overall, the fake copy lacks both grace and proportion and not recommended for serious chess players and collectors.

How do you know it's not the same manufacturer from Amritsar?  Maybe change your country's flag back to the UK where you are located.

TundraMike

And how do you know the manufacturer is not selling the same set without the COA. And please get that flagged changed your IP is from the UK and your last 6 IPS were from there same IP.

Please add some worthy things to the threads, not just the same dung over and over.

Thats entirely possible though. I have bought some reproduced sets from that seller before and I was quite happy, but I have not bought this very specific set, because I have a genuine one with the box and certificate. The genuine one is just perfect. Something completely new yet with traditional touch. Expensive but well worth it. Since I bought it all others set are collecting dust and havent come anywhere near the board.

The last sentence is obviously a lie to fraud Chess consumers.

Lol I took a look at that set, after that statement. Nothing special about it at all. I can think of several other plastic sets I’d rather own.

TundraMike

I agree Eyechess I have been buying DGT plastic sets for 2 years now to give away to children during the holidays. While they are a nice first starter set for people who just may only play casual it is far from being the best plastic set on the market.  I hope no beginner here reading his posts falls for his rhetoric.

Bfighter4935

I don't remember if it was discussed in this topic, but are there some replica of the 2013 World Championship available in some shops? I mean plain plastic one with good weight and felts ?

And replicas of the 50's Zagreb set ?

Eyechess

What a fool you are.  Where do you think these plastic sets are made?  Yes, the answer is China.

Have you ever owned or handled any of these sets, or are you just spouting your opinion?

I have owned these sets and they are not that great.

In an attempt to retrack the thread after the troll t-boned it, I'll say that I've been growing more and more attached to the FIDE World Champion set.  When I first saw it the knights really put me off, as they were a bit scary after being used to the Timeless set.  But I like the new set better than the Timeless set now... great weight and feel in the hand, and in real life I find them much more attractive than their pictures.  I had put the Timeless set away and put these out today to follow the candidates matches.  I must say, they handle very well.  (my 2c)
