After having the opportunity to actually play with the Official 2013 FIDE chess set on a DGT board, I can now say that it they are gorgeous and wonderful to play with IMHO. Pictures do not do these pieces justice. When the pieces are paired with the correct wooden DGT e-board and the play area is lit properly, the whole chess set becomes "eye candy" which makes study or play even more enjoyable at extended periods of time. The longer I stared at them, the more that my  subjective brain appreciated the new design.

Since I handled them myself, I could confirm that the weighted pieces add to the satisfaction of handling quality wooden pieces whether you slide the pieces across the board or lift-and-place them on their squares. It makes a tactile difference when comparing them to the stock classic and unweighted wood pieces that come with every DGT board since the mid-2000s.

Finally, there is no way to mistake pieces from another. This is a non-issue for masters who play blindfold, but visual enthusiasts like myself need to enjoy what is seen with the naked eye. These pieces do not disappoint.

It you are interested in non-electronic pieces.

Thanks for the tip.

You should know that the latest version of the DGT 2013 Official Chess Set come with a revised knight. As another poster has mentioned, the neck swoop is less pronounced so it does not look as narrow and "anemic."

In this photo, the base of the knight is also less trapezoidal and more rounded.  The reproduction set by Royal Chess Mall also has this rounded base. I personally prefer the more trapezoidal base of the original because it's more similar to the bases of the other pieces.

Finally took the plunge and got this FIDE replica chess pieces from a seller in India. 150 USD.

@jaymayuga, your set looks great. Thanks for sharing. Is this the set that you take to clubs and tournaments?

Thanks,

Oliver

@essmanchay , this is the set that was first used in 2013 chess candidates and world chess championships. This is the pieces that are currently being used in Chess Candidates 2020.

Now THAT’S my kind of news! I hoped that the different DGT styles would be cycled through the events more often. What I do NOT look forward to hear is a different style comes out for every tournament.
It’s a chessboard, not a fashion runway!
At least follow the life cycle of equipment and wearable gear of Olympic sports...

If Anand left his mark by influencing the design of the 2013 FIDE pieces, should we expect the Norwegian Carlsen to influence FIDE to make the 2021 pieces look like this:

Hi @jaymayuga,

What I meant was, do you bring this set with you to tournaments, club events and play on it? Is it your "everyday" set?

I am asking because I am looking for an "everyday" wooden chess set.

Thanks again!

Oliver

These are not genuine championship sets and must be from Royal Chess Mall.

Nothing wrong with RCM reproduction pieces. Cheaper sets are perfect for rugged “anywhere” games without the fear of ruining the authentic $600-$700 sets.

There's a nice chessmen named Magnus Carlsen. I wouldn't say it's Norwegian because it's made by Chessbazaar but it's Magnus Carlsen so it's almost the same.

I just use a magnetic chessboard

Thanks for the recommendation on the wooden PlayMagnus pieces.

Hi,

Are you happy with them? I was wondering these days if taking these ones, I read some bad reviews about the poor communication of the seller.

Yesterday, I received my fide chess set. It looks really good, especially the knights. I know a lot of people do not like the design of these pieces, but I think it would be also cool to add more novelty to some other figures as well, because it is year 2021 outside already and time to shift a little bit from the classical Staunton design to the post-modern one. The knights are a good attempt to do it.

In general, I am very glad with the purchase. The figures look good and I want to play chess, solve puzzles, etc. What could be improved is the quality. I think for 200 EUR it should be better. It is ok, but not perfect.

From where did you purchase it?

Hi All,

Hope all of you are doing well happy.png

I meant to ask, has anyone who lives in the EU bought the set from World Chess online shop? If so, I'd like to know if it has been shipped from somewhere within the EU, or from only from the UK? I don't want to pay massive customs fees, set is very expensive on its own.

Thank you in advance,

Kind Regards,

Goran

Does anyone know where I can find the design specifications for the latest official set?  If the specs were in the form of a drawing even better.  The only drawing I have was posted above and it only shows the front of the pieces.  There must be some drawing with dimension limits on it somewhere.  Plan view, Elevations, etc..,

Safe to assume that information is not publicly available on purpose so that people will not be able to easily make 3D printed versions of the set.
