Re-felting pieces?

That’s nice thick felt, nothing like the paper thin felt CB sent me to refelt my pieces.

3mm baize?
BeyondDuplication

I'm not sure exactly how thick it is but it's this stuff:

I bought a remnant and it's gorgeous thick cloth.  It would enhance any chess set.

Thanks for the link, BeyondDuplication.

I use this stuff to remove old felts and any glue reside come off very easily (https://www.homedepot.com/p/ZEP-128-oz-Heavy-Duty-Citrus-Degreaser-ZUCIT128/100676344). Smaller sizes are available at the Home Depot as well. I put a small amount of this orange degreaser in a square tray and fill to just about the thickness of the felt, let it soak for about 3-5 minutes then remove the felt and glue with a metal putty knife. Comes off very cleanly and the minute reside if any can be wiped off with one of those small sponges with a plastic scrub side dampened not wet. Let dry and then apply your new glue and felts. Works on both plastic and wood chess sets.

Preferably keep the base as clean as possible to maintain an eveness in the balance of the chess pieces when you refelt them.

If you're dead-set on spray adhesive, use Foam Fast 74. Way better for fabric like baize or felt. It doesn't have the working time that Super 77 has and it's not quite as aggressive, but you're just spraying and sticking so no worries. Thing is, though, that's 32-34 pieces that you'll have to individually mask (and you'll want to FULLY mask, i.e. cover the whole darn piece except the bottom), and if you don't have a spray jig to hold multiple pieces, you'll be doing each of them individually. Pick up, spritz, set on the baize, repeat. And unless you're awesome with a spray can, if you didn't fully mask every piece then that means a lot of glove changes since you'll be overspraying onto your hand and don't want to pick up your nice pieces with sticky fingers, so really do fully mask. Oh, and you should do this in a very well-ventilated area since even the low-VOC FF74 is still pretty stinky. And it should be somewhere you have also at least put newspaper or carboard down since you don't want the rest of the overspray that doesn't hit your hands to then go on the walls or floor (or furniture) (or pet). Spray adhesives definitely have their place, but this might not be one of them.

Honestly, contact cement would be my choice. I like EcoWeld since it's pretty thin and can be brushed on with a small paintbrush or acid brush into really tight areas. Other contact cements like Barge are pretty thick and can be harder to work without thinning it. Plus, Barge stinks to high heaven. Xylene? Toluene? Maybe both? Other big reasons I like the EcoWeld is that it's not stinky, it washes off your hands with water (it's water-based!), and the bond is really good to fabric and plastic/wood. I use it primarily for leatherwork, but it's so easy to use that it has taken a place of honor next to Elmer's and Titebond for most household little stuff. Just paint a thin coat on, let it sit until it's mostly dry and it's good and tacky, and then stick it to whatever.

Hi. I’m getting myself a plastic Shkolnik III, and most of them come with very degraded brown felt, so I’m just going to take those off and refelt them. What should I look for in good felt?

  • What materials?
  • Any particular brands I should look for?
  • How thick should the felt be? I’m thinking 1 mm might be too thin, but I don’t know. 2 mm max?
  • Should I glue it, or use felt with adhesive?

One criterion I have though is that I don’t want to use green felt. I’m thinking of going for a shade of purple. I found several ones on Amazon, but I don’t know what material and thickness I need to get.

Glues and plastics is a tricky chapter so I´d go with adeshive felt. Also I believe I mm thick felt is enough.

Do you know at what thickness it will destabilize the pieces or look ugly? I saw 1.6 mm felt that I liked the color of. I imagine 1–2 mm should be fine?

As it´s in the eye of the beholder what looks right varies from person to person but it´s safer (imho)to err on the thin side.
