Red and black

Are red and black good colours for chess pieces?
BrownishGerbil

Everything is a matter of taste and I doubt if that would be allowed in tournaments. Red pieces are generally used as the dark side, but I like the combination with black pieces as well. If you like it, why leave it to others to decide for you? 😉

An old coffehouse set of mine in red and black which I find highly appealing as an example.

That is really good looking.

You can see the quality and durability after obvious years of use.

Really nice!

Beautiful set. I know red and black is normally associated with checkers but it works perfectly with chess as well.

Very nice set and I'm sure that combo is very playable.

However, if I may give a word of advice, then I would store them in a chess box when not used. When left on display, the red pieces will darken considerably over time and the contrast with the black pieces will lessen a lot.

I noticed that they have already darken quite a bit and they have always been stored in a box protected from sunlight.

If that is what you like. Buy red and black.

I prefer Ebony and Boxwood....
