Soviet Set - 50s - Lacquered

Sort:
UpcountryRain

I have never been a fan of lacquered sets but felt compelled to acquire this Soviet set when I saw it. It is not the traditional red of the red and black Soviet sets but, rather, terracotta colored. A little unusual but not a problem.

According to the vendor the set is original and not restored. Whether or not that is true, I cannot say. Nonetheless it is in excellent shape.

The Kings stand at 3.25 inches making it on the smaller side.

The line up:

And with their Black counterparts:

Almost forgot the rooks -

And the pawns.

Not a tournament set but overall, pretty. Thanks.

Nice! How much did it cost?

Gorgeous, Up. And great pics. Looks like it was refinished.

Now, now, cghori. But let's say I am on a budget. Wink

It does, cgrau, it does. Makes me curious to know what an original looks like. A darker red would have been nice.

It is. When the light hits it, the terracotta comes out and the black turns to a dark charcoal gray.

I just turned around to look at it in ordinary lighting and it's gorgeous. (Though I don't think I'll be picking up another lacquered set anytime soon.)

That looks gorgeous in photos. I can only imagine how stunning it would be in person. And when you mentioned that black turning to charcoal gray, that sounds impressive.
