How many lessons?

Sort:
FudoMyoo

Hi,

I´m rather new to chess.com and this is my first post, so my apologies for maybe asking something with an obvious answer that I have missed. I have done the free lessons in the chess mentor course (beginner, intermediate and the advanced lessons) and thought they were really helpful.

Now when I have started the expert level course, I can only do one lesson per day. So now when I´m considering if it´s worth paying to be able to do more lessons (quicker), I wonder how many lessons I can do in total in the chess mentor program?

It seems to be 5 courses/50 lessons per "level", and if I look at my mobile phone, there is only two levels that I haven´t completed (expert and master). Does that mean that there is only 100 lessons left for me to do? Or is there more to do in the chess mentor program when I have finished the remaining expert and master courses/lessons?

There are almost 4,000 lessons as you can see by my progress report:

Thank you for the answer! Obviously I wasn't looking in the right place. That is alot of lessons btw, it could keep me busy for a long time.

Yes there are a lot of lessons and the freedom to do or review as many as I like is the main reason I have a diamond membership.

FudoMyoo

Yes that is a good reason to get a diamond membership. My problem, as I have kids, is rather lack of time. I don´t have time to do more then 3 lessons per day, most days not even that, so if I upgrade my account, the most basic upgrade would probably be enough. Atleast until I get addicted enough.. ;-)

Chess Mentor is a waste of time with some exceptions. It requires a person of a sound patience and real constitution for over the board chess.

That is, the chess mentor gives you tips you might implement in a real game much more so than any game you'll play online. But like a real game, it takes time to go through each lesson and understand the position and the choppy anecdotes/reference mixtures to get something out of it.

It's easy to get a high score in these simulations. mentor is not even regulated to external constraints such as time. It is therefore, quite useless because it does not operate at the speed and pressure of a real game. Also, chess mentor is phenomenally stupid in reinforcements and encouragements and myopic hints that are centered almost entirely on the peculiar dynamic of a game far removed from in front of you (didn't see how the position arose or what's going on.

It's actually really hard to find good lessons. Most lessons cannot give feedback regarding the approach, your reasoning, the consequence, and whether it was the correct choise based on the reasoning.

Unfortunately, chess is more so a subject to study than it can be some wild and spontaneous insights and visions...

All top class players started at around 10-12, sometimes little less and sometimes little more.

They were trained by the best chess players and so on.

So, one should not aspire to be a great chess player without making practical expectations.

1800 -2000 is very very strong. I think very few on this site would stand a chance with this level player. Anyway, ELO and USCF can't remember the one more strict but 1800-2000 always the range in my mind you can hope with hard work, loss of much time, and proper, systematic, formal training.

You have a note recommending Silman on your home page, so would these be mostly OK?

I think the Chess Mentor program is great and definitely a more wide range and interactive alternative to books and much cheaper too. I'd say spending $99/year for unlimited Chess Mentor access and video's is a pretty cheap alternative to an actual coach, even if it is not as good.
FudoMyoo

Thanks Snark91 and Candidate35 for your feed-back.

I understand that it´s not the same as real life coach, but I think that is an unfair comparison. A real life coach is more expensive and usually not available that hour when I have managed to put my kids to bed or whatever rare occasion where I manage to get some private time. A more reasonable comparison is with chess books, but they usually bore me to death. I also dont aspire to become a chess master or even to compete, just to improve my game a bit.

So, a follow-up question: if I buy a gold membership for a year and later realize that I want to get a platinum or diamond membership, do I only pay the difference in price of those memberships or how does it work?

At the Q&A they write: "Simply choose your new plan and your existing membership credit will be applied to your new membership plan."

Should that be interpreted as that if I have, lets say, 10 month left of a gold membership, and I upgrade to diamond, that I will get fewer month with diamond membership status, or do I have to pay more to become a diamond member for the remaining 10 month?

Candidate35

That I'm unsure about and you should ask the staff. I will say that Platinum gives you access to 5 Chess Mentor courses a day. I'm not sure about Gold. Diamond gives unlimited access. I will probably upgrade to Diamond later this year.

Thanks, will send them a mail later and ask. As a funny coincidence (or maybe not?) I just got an offer for a free 10-day trial of a diamond membership. Maybe I will be hooked afterwards. That is probably the plan. :-D

Most of those lessons come from the mastery ones, honestly, the mastery ones aren't that useful after you get through the advanced ones, you see most of the solutions practically instantly, the only one I would recommend from the mastery one is the opening as that isn't as intuitive and helps a lot in-game.

Hi there, I was wondering where I can check my progress report. Can someone please advise me where I can check?

EllieSapphire

How do you find number of lessons taken versus number left? I can only find number taken on my stats page.
