new chess player

hello, I'm new to the game of chess, and the past 2-3 weeks I have played mostly advanced players thinking that I may learn quicker.

Basically, what are some good ways to improve my game?

Chess is fun, with the different tactics and situations.  I'd like to learn more.

Thanks.

For one thing, keep playing. That's really important.

Learning basic tricks and tactics (like the pin, or the fork) is also important. You might try tactics trainer for that- and don't worry about the time it takes you to solve the problems, just try to figure them out.

Learning a few basic endgames is also a good idea, like rook and king vs. king, or catching a king in the back row behind his own pawns after he's castled. (Also, the bishop- queen combo on f7 is good to know.)

I also think it's good to only use one opening at first, so you can get comfortable with it before trying new things. (Of course, as black this means getting used to one opening against King Pawn games and another against Queen Pawn games.) If you want to experiment until you find one you like that's fine, but once you pick one learn it! (I started with e4, which is pretty common.)

Hope that helps for now!

that is a huge help thank you...  I mean, it is fun learning and when I win it's a bonus.  Everyone has their own strategy and maybe I shouldn't try to take them all in and develop my own.  I will look up the moves you speak of and start out with the same couple moves.  I appreciate the advice!

Welcome, this post helped me aswell.

Go to the bookstore and look around for some beginner's books on chess strategy and tactics.  Go through the books slowly and with a board in front of you.  Use the tactics trainer here, too.

I have gone over the tactics trainer a bit, but not the whole thing.  I'll be sure to complete it as soon as I can.  Thanks for the feedback.
