Personality and Attitude
I just want to echo those sentiments. It's much more instructive from a user-perspective to hear a common language reason for a blunder than having the engine spout lines at you, especially if you're not used to visualization. One of my biggest put offs about reading some chess books/tutorials is that I need a physical board in front of me to keep up with a couple of alternative lines.
Here, it actually explains the problem and in a fashion that makes the principles eaiser to digest.
Just wanted to say good job.
There's an interesting parallel with an article in the current Chess Life, which talks about annotators who "write up" vs those who "write down". It would be cool if you could put in your rating and it would talk to you at your level.
Not exactly easy, I'm just saying it would be cool.
Direct quote from Chess Mentor:
"10.Re5+? allows 10...Kd4, when White has not made the net any smaller at all. Don't just check for the joy of checking."
I was ragging on Chess Mentor but I want to say one of the things I really really like about it is: its personality. You actually feel like a coach is there telling you "what the hell were you thinking"...and I find that very amusing while I learn. Especially since Chess Mentor can't actually think you're an imbecile.
