Were chess more exciting back then? Or not?

As we can see, in the world-class chess tournaments, most of the games of players with similiar rank (for example: Caruana and Giri) are ending with a draw. This could be caused by:

- new chess openings and new variants,

- the fact that you can check them in chess computers anytime,

- and, in result, that you will better know how to react in different situations on the board.

Back then, for example in 19th century, there was just a group of better players.

And, the chess were more offensive: more sacrifices, attacks etc.

(but there also were more blunders)

What do you think?

I dunno Wether IT was more exciting but you gotta See that there wasn't much Other to do for Entertainment unlike today they Had No TV , Internet and all that. So for Entertainment ( apart from watching the ocassional hanging ( yes that was realy done for Entertainment)) you would Play/ watch Board games

Today’s chess is more exciting for the average viewer because technology better allows us to appreciate the greatness. In the days of Karpov v Kasparov you didn’t have the likes of Hikaru and Levi making the games intellectually accessible. That said, the style of play was probably more aggressive and interesting, if less accurate.

It's a bit like modern day football & VAR , with handballs & drives + the $$$$$$$, I think chess engine helped / to take the magic out of the game .
