This is one of the funniest things I have heard all day.  You can't crush any variation of the French.  The Advance French gives Black early equality and White's only advantage is his space.  White is stuck defending his pawns though.  Play the Tarrasch or the Paulsen.  They give you at least a decent method of handling the French

Why would you ever play Nd2 in that position.  What's wrong with Nc3.  That's right... nothing!  If he really wants the worst thing that can happen with Nc3 is black can threaten to trade off his best piece.  Nd2 is crummy, and amazingly black can even get away with Nc3 after this dubious move, where presumably each player will try to play worse moves than the other while getting away with it Surprised.  The advance is certainly a decent method of handling the french, with plenty of great players using it.  Dont be put off just because beginners like me use it.  It's true though, you arent going to be crushing any variation of the french, you're in for a long game whatever you play, so long as it's not something really bad.  Smile

I recommended Nc3 as well.  Don't put down the Tarrasch!  You would be insulting Karpov and many other great grandmasters who played it.  Do you even know the opening theory behind it??? Although Nc3 is more active, it blocks the c pawn from defending White's center with c3.

please explain the theory of the tarrasch

Not really, i play the advance (badly) Innocent.  I know the Tarrasch is an acceptable opening, but I felt like poking fun at what seems an incredibly unnatural move.  It seems to me that the Tarrasch is as overrated as the advance is underrated, ie greatly.  It's arguably the worst possible book move for white, and the only reason so many people play it is to try to avoid lines which are probably actually better for white.  The funny thing is, the major downside of putting the pawn on c3 in an opening is that it takes the square away from the knight.  If only they could both have the square.  Smile

The French is a very versatile defensive weapon.  Redhotpawn has an IM Ronald Weyerstrass who's 350-0 and he uses the French defense almost exclusively.   Your best bet is probably the nc3 winawar Kasperov said, "nc3 is the strongest move in the position."

Something like this might be good:

Ermm, if anybody wants to see a variant of the french defense, look at my game with craxxus, our variant is rather interesting.

If you want theory on the Tarrasch, here it is.
