SLAUGHTER the Queen's Pawn: the Polandball Trap

This is a SUPER DEADLY trap for 800-1000 elo to try out! they play d4, we play e5, the Englund Gambit. They capture dxe5, we develop with Bc5 (it's a surprise tool we'll use for later) & they play e4. Here we play d6, where White, up a pawn, is eager to accept. We ignore the threatened pawn with Nc6 and Dxc7?? falls for the landmine we set up back on move with the move Bxf2!! Kxf2?? and then Qxd1! where Black goes on to win the endgame.

This is an interesting and fun trap! The Englund Gambit often catches lower-rated players off guard due to the boldness of the pawn sacrifice, but the idea of using the surprise move Bc5 is a clever way to keep White on edge.

However, I would advise caution for those attempting this trap, as more experienced players will recognize the weakness in Black’s position after the early sacrifices, and they might avoid falling into it. The key here is maintaining the initiative after Black sacrifices the material, especially if White plays accurately with moves like Nf3, targeting Black's early weaknesses.

But for players at the lower end of the Elo spectrum, this setup is certainly a great tool for practising tactics like piece activity and finding forks and skewers, which are critical to gaining momentum in the game. The follow-up with Bxf2 and Qxd1 is a great example of the power of coordinated attacking moves.

Looking forward to hearing how others have used this trap in their games!

Could you link a game with this opening?

A link game would be useful for the huge number of players that don't have all of board notation memorized.

Just looked at it and I will definitely use this as I always play Englund against 1. d4. This is essentially an ICMB trap but with a marginally simpler line lol.

Great reminder to develop the knights and play e3.
