It's a good opening against lower level defensive players, it is kind of good opening against attacking play. It is a horrible opening against risk takers. The weakest link is the f3 pawn. Smack its pawn early on with a knight or bishop and white is already in panic mode. Same goes for when black uses it. I used it as a lazy mode to advance to higher levels or people who depend a lot on studied openings as it forces them out of their own game. My highest rated defeated player using it was one with an 1800+ level. I love it for its kind of games it provides but I hate it at the same time for cramping things up in the beginning.

Well done. Once in Chessmaster 2000 I started a max rating cpu against cpu level match giving black the fried fox defense and white a regular sound centered opening.It was a crazy match but black won eventually. Probably due the lack of risk that a machine takes in trading of high for low valued pieces in gambits out of the book. It tries to do things sound as it always does. Defending the pawn in front of the king is key to the game for the initiator. Key to win for the other side is to slice the pawn in the first few moves at any cost and then apply max pressure for a comfy win. That trap is why it is considered highly risky. But then again, most chessplayers don't take that risk as they go for sound games which makes it feel like a good opening.
