Chess Players True Strength

Hey, my chess coach (also my friend) has told me that people so called say that there a "Grandmaster" and that they can "beat everyone". Don't be afraid of that because most of the time there lying (unless there rating is extremely high). I was playing a guy today in chess.com who said they were a grandmaster to scare me. And you know what, I did the fools mate on him. So I made a clear list to show if your a bad player, an ok player, a experienced player, or a grandmaster.

                             A bad player

If you don't know the scholars mate.

  • If you don't know how to checkmate.
  • If you move only 1 piece 7 times in a row
  • If you never won a game
  • If you don't know what a stalemate is or how to stop it.
  • If you never won a game

                                An ok player

  • If you know the scholars mate
  • If you can win if you play black
  • If you know how to castle
  • If you know how to promote pawns but can't en passant
  • If you can checkmate with 2 rooks or a queen
  • If you know the value of each piece
  • If you know how to stop mates

                                 An Experienced Player

  • If you know the scholars mate and the fools mate
  • If you can en passant and castle
  • If you can mate with 1 rook
  • If you can understand the importance of sacrificing a piece to take another piece or to sacrifice to gain an advantage
  • If you won many games
  • If you play in tournaments
  • If you can make pins
(Optional) If you have a rating between 800-2000

                          A Grandmaster

  • If you can do the Fools mate and the Scholars mate
  • If you can make a draw when your oppenent has a queen
  • If you can checkmate with 2 knights and a king
  • If you can checkmate with 2 bishops
  • If you can promote 5 pawns in one game
  • If you can play in tournaments and win other grandmasters
  • If you can make skewers, pins, and forks in 1 game
  • If you can achieve atleast a 6th place trophy or higher
  • (Important) if you have a rating of 2,500 or higher.
Don't be disappointed that your not a grandmaster or an experienced player. This puzzle here will prove if your a grandmaster or an experienced puzzle.

It is impossible to checkmate with just 2 knights and a king against a lone king unless your opponent messes up.

GmatCat

Yea it's impossible to mate with two knights but there is in exception. I read it somewhere in the forums.

KevinMan

well little buddy good opinion, read your article again after 3 years of playing chess maybe 2012, then comment on it

first of all u can't have 5 queens when its's only 8 pawns in a game u have 5 pawns on the board and 5 queens. not possible

Knowing the Scholars mate and Fool's mate is mere memorization. It says nothing about one's level. You also allow for a player to be experienced who has, "won many games," but you do not specifiy who those games must be against. I can win a lot of games against bad players and still be inexperienced.

Thats puzzle even an ok player could work out! And he is right no way to mate with 2 knights, at least not without a pawn or something else to aid them either from ur opponent causing there own demise or you personally having the material there to back them up with a smothered mate kinda idea.

800 rating is still a beginner by the way. I dont believe you can call yourself experienced untill at least 1400 OTB in my view anyway.

Daedalus

I guess that makes me an "experienced" player. Nice job with the listing but the puzzle is probably in between the "ok" and "experienced" level

If u have 8 pawns which all can become queens, if they get to the other end. It is very possible! :)

count the pawns on the board and count the queens how many queens if the other pawns promote.    answer 10 queens maybe 8 queens and two rooks turned upside down for queens.

LOL! First of all, I had to say that this post made me burst out laughing.

Grandmaster = can do the Fools' Mate and Scholars' Mate (check)

can achieve 6th place or higher (check)

make skewers, pins, and forks in one game (check)

can play in tournaments with other GMs and win and have a rating of 2500+ . . . (well 3/4 ain't bad)

Among other things there are 17 black pieces in the diagram...

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were going camping. They pitched their tent under the stars and went to sleep. Sometime in the middle of the night Holmes woke Watson up and said: "Watson, look up at the stars and tell me, what do you see?"

Watson replied: "I see millions and millions of stars."

Holmes said: "And what do you deduce from that?"

Watson replied: "Well, if there are millions of stars, and if even a few of those have planets, it's quite likely there are some planets like earth out there. And if there are a few planets like earth out there, there might also be life."

And Holmes said: "Watson, it means that somebody stole our tent."

Absolute nonsense, I am afraid!.

While generally (95% of the time) it is impossible, there is a specific situation, that is 2 knights and a king against a king and a pawn in which you can do the checkmate with extremely careful move. (I have done this exercise and it is really difficult).

But, yes, it is impossible to checkmate a lone king with a king and 2 knights.

alloyace

Yea, I admit it is impossible to checkmate with 2 knights but you can with 2 knights and a king against a alone king because they can screw up. See heres the position:

Yes you are right. The correct way to phrase it is that it is impossible to FORCE checkmate with 2 knights and a king. Also as Drahcir281089  mentioned, it is possible to force checkmate with K+N+N vs K+P, albeit it is extremely difficult. This type of position was reached in Yue - Anand (Corus 2009). It was a theoretically won position but even the world champ couldn't convert the win (he was blindfolded though)

That position is scientifically impossible to achieve in a real game.
