Check out your local library, see what chess books they have.

Primarily, play chess. There is no more validating manner to realize you are a Chess player. How you would prefer to be regarded and/or how much you stand to improve without books is the remaining element, I'm supposing.

I liken this to developing/maintaining regulated basketball wherewithall while playing recreational and/or streetball. If your concern is translating your passion and abilities into regulated ("official") Chess games, my suggestion is to look into the possibility of joining a local Chess Club.

If a chess club exposes you to less structural experience than mutual passion, you may best serve yourself to suggest and/or introduce official standards and practice for consideration therein.

I have an interesting point of view.  You become a real chess player after you lose a meaningful or important game and bounce back better from it.
