IQ of chess players

What is an IQ of an average chess player??

Does playing chess help the development of children's brain?

And does playing chess improves one's problem solving skills in everyday's life?

If so, share your example.  ;)

i dont think there is any connection between IQ and ability at chess......i am rated 2000+ and i cant fasten my shoelaces :-)))

To think that IQ and chess are related is presumptuous and conceited.

relax man he's only asking

I'd like to propose a meaningless statistic is yes I would.

i am not making any statements or presuming, i'm merely asking.

You can freely express your opinions.

Considering I've posted a photo of myself in a Santa Claus hat, I'd have to say it has nothing to do with IQ. Ha! HA! I believe that chess is teaching me to become more patient and to look at all possibilities of a situation or problem. I think I make less rash judgements. But, I also believe that anything one does to stimulate their minds probably influences their intelligence, to a degree.Smile

I do believe there has been some work in the USA to suggest that if children are encouraged to play chess it can have a positive academic effect - however, there are many other activities that the same could be said of.

Whoa, cool your jets, slick - he was just asking an innocent question.

As for IQ, it probably doesn't matter much - might help in certain elements of chess, but it's doubtful there is a defined relation between rating and IQ.

Besides, IQ is an awkward entity to adequately establish a defined quantitative system of measurement for anyways - IQ tests, in particular (in my opinion, anyways), don't always seem to fully capture or accurately measure human intelligence - at least not all aspects of it. For example, why some people are terrible at mathematics but excel at problem solving. It's all relative...

Some people naturally gravitate towards certain areas of intellectual activity.

There is a difference between intelligence and skill - it's like comparing apples and oranges.

So in my opinion, there is no defined, proven, or noticeable correlation between IQ and rating.

Ah, silly me - I never answered your original question, dragonthomas.

To answer that, yes, I believe that chess does indeed improve a child's education and brain development, especially if introduced (in a friendly environment) at an early age. Chess has been shown and proven to stimulate areas of the brain - improving functions that deal with problem solving, situational analysis, spacial awareness, etc...

As long as chess is not forced upon a child, it does encourage them to excercise their mind to develop more creative solutions to obstacles and may very well aid them later on throughout their academic career if continued.

you may have a point with the coralation, but your causation is backwords.  intesigence is nessacery for the development of chess skill.

Does playing chess help develop a childs brain.

Depends on how hard they are trying. I used to do my mums crosswords but made little effort towards getting the right answers. A talented idiot can learn nothing with enough effort.

So, do you have a large collection of wellies, sandels and high heels? Are you Morphy reborn :)

I think there isnt a direct connection, but chess trains your brain to think logically, and makes it easier to solve puzzles, so it should affect your IQ, though not dramatically, and other things can improve your IQ faster, so if you want a higher IQ try something else

 Fit? Settle doon loon.

dragonthomas

I personally also don't believe there is any real correlation between IQ and chess rating.

Forget the ratings....

What i am interested in is how does chess affect the ways people think or solve problems, especially in children, and... in practical lives.

I believe chess might improve one's IQ not dramatically though only slightly.

yeh... I agree it's hard to measure one's IQ...

IQ is related to chess, but there are many other factors.

Ask yourself this - do you ever see low IQ people become scientists?mathematicians? I suspect most GMs do have at least slightly above average IQ.

There is no way anyone even a  genius is going to be good in chess unless he/she is very interested in chess - that is the first factor. Your interest in the game.

On the other hand, lets say a person has average iQ about 85 and this is confirmed by other tests - academic performance etc. This person might be quite a good chess player (with extreme dedication) but I doubt could ever be a IM much less a GM.  Similar to how this person can never be a good mathematician/scientist etc.

People tend to gravitate to what they are good at anyway - so its not really a big deal...

theres a reason why alot of scientists in russia took up chess... and not alot of politicians :P

My IQ is 64 and I play chess better than a lot of humans. Chess is great for learning because it teaches critical thinking skills. It would take a really long post to tell you about all the things that chess does, but if you are interested, you can message me and I'll send back an expanded response. One of my goals is to actually create a chess workshop for schools and public classes to teach people chess and how to integrate its skillset to everyday life.

I am a professor of neurology at Johns Hopkins University.  I conducted a study in which I found that a person's IQ and intellingence are directly related, i.e., the higher the IQ the higher the ability at playing chess.  Lol.Wink Owned. Noob.
