I don't think it really matters. Somewhere along the way, the strongest programs eclipsed the strongest humans. As to whether Kasparov got a fair match or not, the mystery may never be solved. However, the fact remains that a handful of programs around nowadays could easily beat the pants off the best humans in history. I think there would have been a controversy no matter where or when this 'passing of the torch' took place. Whatever you want to take from that...
