plz help anyone know the correct current way to get candidate master in chess?

I have went to a lot of websites and guides to how to become a candidate master. I know the must-haves, like getting a 2200+ elo. But some people are saying, and some aren't, that you must pay money, participate in official FIDE matches, or some other stuff that I am kind of concerned about. When I went to the FIDE Wiki page, it said I only need a 2200 elo to get the CM title and it would grant it to me immediately. Just to give you some insight, I am a former 1570 who has defeated the Li bot once, but I am pretty washed up. Can someone tell me if 2200 elo is all I need and it would be granted immediately, or is there some other requirement that I am not aware about?

You would need to get a 2200+ in FIDE regular rated OTB events. There is a fee paid for titles and is charged to the player's federation. If that federation doesn't pay it then the player would be responsible. It's 50 Euros for the CM title.

So getting a 2200 is chess.com is not enough? And how do I participate in these FIDE OTB events?

No, you can't get the title from online play.

If your flag is correct, you would need to join the US Chess Federation and find tournaments to play in that are FIDE regular rated (not rapid or blitz and in the US those would be rated under US Chess and FIDE). Those can be found on the US Chess events calendar.

OutOfCheese

chess.com have their own rating system, to get a FIDE title you need to be FIDE rated. So 2200 FIDE, not 2200 CC. Be prepared that OTB tournaments are a lot harder than playing online and getting 2200 FIDE rating is a lot of work if you didn't get born as a chess saint superhero (and even then you'd probably have to study a lot).

Hello my zip code 13125

insane

you have to go outside and play some fide tournaments but these are very painful to do and take very long

sentimentalvandalism

Do I need to play in only one fide-rated tournament to get my ranking and title of CM?

To add on to the confusion, USCF also has a CM title, awarded by earning 5 norms at the 2000 USCF level. If you're hearing all sorts of different things online this might be part of the reason why.

So in summary, I'd have to go to 5 FIDE-rated games, each tournament costing 50 Euros, and beat a 2200 elo in chess? How long do each tournaments cost and how do I get 2200 FIDE elo rather than Chess.com elo?

sentimentalvandalism

how long do each tournamest last*

OutOfCheese

It says 5 games against FIDE rated players. Not everybody at a tournament will be FIDE rated, like you wouldn't have a rating when you go there, right? So you may also play unrated people at that tournament. That means you could be rated after just 1 tournament if you played 5 rated players or it could take more if you play many unrated players.

https://handbook.fide.com/chapter/B012024

Nowhere does it say that for the title of CM you need to beat a 2200. You need to have at least 2200 FIDE rating and have played at least 30 rated games. You get FIDE rating by playing against FIDE rated players.

What a tournament costs depends on the tournament, some may be free some may have an admittance fee, similarly nobody can tell you how long a tournament will last because they're all different.

The 50€ is for the title only.

sentimentalvandalism

Wait so do I need to play 5 games against rated players or 30 games?

OutOfCheese

You play 5 games against rated players to get a rating. To get the FIDE title of CM you need to have at least 2200 rating and have played at least 30 rated games.

sentimentalvandalism

If this is so, why does the FIDE Wiki page say that there are no norms for CM other than 2200?

OutOfCheese

Because completing 30 games isn't a norm. Read what norms are. It doesn't even say you have to win those 30 games, what kind of norm would that be.

OutOfCheese

1.3 Titles may be gained by achieving a published or interim rating at some time (see 1.5.3a). For ratings achieved after 1st July 2017, the player must at that time have played at least 30 rated games:

1.3.1 FIDE Master ≥2300

1.3.2 Candidate Master ≥2200

1.3.3 Women FIDE Master ≥2100

1.3.4 Women Candidate Master ≥2000

sentimentalvandalism

Thus, after playing 30 games, you would have to be 2200+ rated? If you do not reach 2200 elo, do you have to continue playing games until 2200 elo? I have seen that some players have gotten the Candidate Master title with elo lower than 2200.

OutOfCheese

You can play 30 games or 10000 games to reach 2200+, it doesn't matter, you just got to have at least 30 games completed to get the title.

"Direct title (automatic title) is a title gained by achieving a certain place or result in a tournament. On application by the player’s federation and confirmation by the Qualification Commission, such titles are awarded automatically by FIDE."

...

"Titles may be awarded for specific results in specific Championship events"

...

"For a direct title to be awarded immediately an applicant has to have achieved at some time a minimum rating published or interim (see 1.5.3a), as follows:

GM

2300

WGM

2100

IM

2200

WIM

2000

FM

2100

WFM

1900

CM

2000

WCM

1800

This requirement does not apply to direct CM/WCM titles earned at the Open and Women’s Chess Olympiads

For ratings achieved after 1st January 2024, the player must at that time have played at least 30 rated games"

https://handbook.fide.com/chapter/B01DirectTitles2024

So if you eg win the World Amateur <1700 championship you can get a CM title without being 2200+.
