"Sometimes life throws you a vicious curveball that derails your life..."  I wonder what happened to the guy?  Based on his new Aryan-nations style facial hair, I'm thinking some prison time.

What about you?

Crazychessplaya

I don't see this guy going to prison for anything other than jaywalking or loitering.

Conflagration_Planet

Or boring people to death with his chess lectures.

Find someone else with 70 plus chess videos who is interesting to watch better than The Backyard Professor? If you find one, please tell me, because I couldn't find one.

Jenium

This is just so painful to watch ... "There are no central pawns in the centre ..."

He is good. Ive watched quite a few of his videos and it has helped me raise my rating by at least 150+ points. He rarely comes on this site anymore but you should challange him, sometimes he accepts sometimes he is too busy but its worth a try. He is in my friend list if you havent already found him.

kclemens

It took me about 5 min to realize I wouldn't improve my chess by watching his videos. But sometimes he has cool video segments which are mini-tours of the picturesque area of Idaho where he films. Those nature clips are much better IMO than any of his chess content

People always try to hate on other people. I believe the Backyard Professor is doing a noble thing. People criticize how some of his earlier games he made mistakes, said, or did something wrong but than none of them have ever showed any of there 600 ranked games or 1000 ranked games. They talk smack saying he is a terrible teacher terrible chess player and yet they lack the courage to show there low level games with mistakes and errors.

He didn't give false advertising. He has stated in many of his videos he is not a grandmaster and if you don't believe in listening to his idea's or watching his video you can always change the channel as they say. I have learned alot of things from him that I didn't know before. His idea's even though they might not be a grandmaster level is still sometimes helpful because he trys to use information that he has read in books from people who are grandmaster level. He has also done some very nice and interesting Grandmaster games which I found very interesting. He has showed some examples of chess openings. He is also very entertaining even if you don't believe in his chess style he is still entertaining to watch. I have watched every one of his video's and some of them serveral times because they make me laugh or are interesting seeing how the games transpired.

The beauty that exist in chess sometimes isn't in it's perfection but in its flaw's blunders, mistakes, errors bring different positions and imagines we have never seen and it is always interesting to view in my opinon

Truthfully I started chess because of his enthusiasm toward the game lol. Almost like that old saying monkey see monkey do. Sometimes you see people having a fun time and try to join in and that is how I ended up playing chess.

I thought that was one of his best chess video's he was just so excited to win and his saying of how he was crushing his opponent had me smiling chess can be such a fun game if you wish it to be.

Did you see that video where he was talking about how players love to check the king and attack and he kept saying "check the king, check the king, attack, attack ..... That was so funny lol

dpnorman

Sure he has a passion for the game but he also isn't qualified to teach it, and there are just a lot of much better ways to improve at chess than watch this guy. He is entertaining, though. His biggest problem seems to be that he doesn't calculate or look at variations nearly enough, causing him to miss stuff and blunder easily.

FRE87

Making videos can just be a good way of helping yourself learn the game. Whether other people want to watch them is up to them. As longas this guy doesn't claim to be a titled player then I don't see a problem.

This is the one that I first saw:  Good stuff!

Sorry, John, but this is definitively not good stuff. He spends the entire video insulting his opponents's play while all the while it is him that is losing the game. He wins only because his opponent blunders his queen.not only is it poor form to trash talk, but he simply doesn't have a clear understanding of the game, and the combination of those two things is the worst form of arrogance imaginable. Another problem with his videos is that credulous beginners could form bad habit and perspectives if they take him seriously. Bad stuff.
