oinquarki - I think your inclusion of Frodo Baggins is much deserved and all I can say is: It's about time the little people get some respect!!Laughing

jntrcs: Like most disciplines, the champions of the past 50 years are better than the champions of the previous 50 years. And within the past 50 years, the most recent 25 years are the strongest. So this would leave us, in theory, with the question of "who is the current strongest player". But that leaves aside G. Kasparov, who may not be the current strongest player (because he is not up-to-date on the current theoretical discussions in the openings) but is most likely the strongest player of all time.

The strongest computer is better than the strongest human, and it's not really that close.

nezhmetdinov is way the best tactical player , so for me

1. Nezhmetdinov

2. Kasparov

3. Capablanca

4. Anthony Mies

Who cares for the rest? :P

Whipster

Top ten? In terms of match-playing ability, I reckon:

Garry Kasparov

Anatoly Karpov

Emmanuel Lasker

Bobby Fischer

Mikhail Botvinnik

Viktor Korchnoi

Tigran Petrosian

Boris Spassky

Jose Capablanca

Vishwanathan Anand

Though the modern players are probably stronger in absolute terms with the advancement of chess theory, etc.
