I don't know about you, but I like Nezhmetdinov the best, because he played Qxf6!? (queen sacrifice) against Chernikov.

What about Alekhine? I also would switch Fisher and Kasparov around, although I think they are pretty evenly matched.

1. Fischer (in his prime) RIP

2. Kasparov (has done a lot for the game, and hasn't lost his sanity)

3. Morphy

4. Capablanca

5. Karpov, or Tal    its a tie.

ah this old chesnut!  i got alot of hateful postings when i put a topic like this up, everyone said "go read old posts" and "you cant objectivly compare old masters with new masters" blah blah blah...i say, i want to be a part of a conversation not read old posts!

Lasker, Kasparov, Fischer, Capa, Morphy...i think thats a hard list to argue with!

yranvefas

capablance, fisher, alekhine, morphy, kasparov  - in that order.

Any list of the top 5 of all time that does NOT include Fischer cannot be taken seriously.

Mine : Fischer, Morphy, Kasparov, Karpov, Steinitz

sstteevveenn

So a list without capablanca is surely just a wind up right? Wink

wingtzun

kasparov

fischer

karpov

botvinik

alekhine=tal.

1.Kasparov

2.Fischer

3.Karpov

I agree!  I would put it chronologically: Morphy, Lasker, Capa, Fischer, Kasparov and say that each dominated his era in his prime, whether it be brief (Morphy) or long (Lasker)
