who do you think is the best chess player of all time?
Paul Morphy. When he was 56 he remembered all the games he had ever played in championships, including those that he played blindfold. I chessically surrender
"Paul Morphy. When he was 56 he remembered ..."
I believe that Morphy was born in 1837. I do not recall ever reading of any attempt to dig him up in 1893 and determine what he still remembered.

Bobby Fischer was epic. I like to listen to his interviews on Youtube and pretend that has still with us. In a sense he will never die. Long live the king!
All the players starting from first scratch RJ Fisher, tal, capablanca, karpov and kasparov were too great during their times..but in modern day chess i am surely impressed by anand and carlsen..See the novelties often played by anand...
I am not strong enough to say.
Above a certain level they are all chess Gods. Ask Kasparov or Carlsen (if they can be trusted to not automatically nominate themselves). i.e. strong players that have actually studied and understood the games of most of the contenders for the title of "all time greatest" right back to the mid 1800s.
