Every era there was a great man to be born. I think they are best at the time they became a champion.

You got that right. Back in those days, people like Morphy played for the kill, their combinations were breath taking. Nowdays, most GM's suffer from the "playing for the draw" syndrome. Many of todays games are so long and boring is not even funny. Once in a while a nice brilliancy pops up. I believe Karpov is no match for Morphy.

Morphy is the best Morphy, Karpov is the best Karpov. It is almost impossible to compare these things. There is no scientific control since it is a different era. You must also consider the difference in knowledge too. Chess is progressing in it's own right, and the individual players also fall at different times on chess' timeline of development!!

Paul Morphy, hands down. Tongue out

todays players are more skilled than before,so i think karpov is better.

Karpov has a huge advantage in opening theory and positional theroy.  Not a fair game at all.

Yes, but Morphy would still win.

Nah, Karpov's structure would be to conservative... he would not make the mistakes Morphy needed to capitalize on.  Further, Morphy never heard of an Indian opening... major weaknesses in theory for him.

Not saying Karpov was better in his day than Morphy, just that he would win if they played.

These players come from two different ages of chess history.  Nevertheless,  it would be a good game if they really played against each other, but Karpov would win.  That's all.

Karpov wil beat him right off!!. Anderssen had winning positions in their match and could have won but because of his total respect and awe for morphy he missplayed won positions. He himself realised it after the match.Karpov does not take complicated positions and stategical risks. Karpov will sweek him positionally.

Karpov would win. Morphy was a genius, but he would be missing a century or so of theory, wouldn't be accustomed to Karpov's subtle play and technique, would be at a disadvantage using modern tools to prepare for a match, and besides he never considered himself a professional chess player. It would be a very interesting match, though. :)
