Grandpappy Driftwood! He was the best player in Skunkwater Flats and second best in Yellowsnow Township. And that's a big place. Not many people though.

Tal, but a close second is Emanuel Lasker, only German world champ, longest, great mathematician, plus he dabbled in Go, another game I like.
