Why are players from india so good

Sort:
Don

All these reasons aside, Indians are good at chess because chess is popular in India. Smart or not, someone raised by indian parents to be a chess player will be a good chess player...

India is the home of the old meme "he's over qualified for blue collar so has to drive a taxi" because indian general education is world class and a massive amount of Indians go into further study. Of course that doesn't explain exactly why india people are good at chess but explains a little.

Indian education is awful

indian education is strict but extremely effective

yes extremely effective at making people stupid

You don’t speak for the entire country.

Nobody speaks for an entire country. What is your point even!?

Neethtuda says “ I just will never understand why people think we are so good, I cant even play well against the scotch.” He’s basing Indian chess players abilities on his play against the scotch.

I think there are 2 reasons why Indians are good at chess -

1) The population - There are more than a billion people there, so naturally a fraction of them will be interested in chess.

2) The influence - There are a lot of Indian Grandmasters and the government values a game such as chess, such things influence people.

I don't think that really explains why Indians are better than him at chess even though they have around the same rating, although that does explain why so many Indians play chess. Tbh, I dont even look at the flag of the person who is playing because it really doesn't matter. (imo)

It could be that some Indians have not really been introduced to chess and are prodigies and are underrated🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

86 I'll explain it in a different way. Hypothetically, let's say 10% of chess players are good at chess. Now if you take the population of a country like Finland, there will probably be a few hundred thousand chess players, and only a few thousand will be good at chess. But if you take a country like India, the no of chess players is prob in millions, so a few hundred thousand will be good at chess. So even if the percentage stays the same, the number is more because of the size of population.

Im_a_Crow

I am from india and I am no good

Yama

ikr bro its like chess was invented in india or something.

Yama

probably wrong but in the game go since it was invented in asia its dominated by asian players because they grew up with it in their culture. One could say the same thing for chess.

stereomadness123

chess was invented in India diamond

trimalo

Historical reason, some countries love chess like the Philippines, Iran, India :

The game was introduced to southern Europe in the tenth century by the Arabs, but it is not known where exactly it was invented. It derives from shatranj or chatrang, which is itself the Persian version of chaturanga from classical India. The current rules were established at the end of the 15th century. Chess is one of the most popular puzzle games in the world.

The US is not great despite a large population but they had Bobby Fischer the best player of all time who did the imposssible in beating the Russian armada for the first time in 1972.

This is the most childish back and forth about India’s education system I’ve seen

chess dot com ratings isn't something that should be taken seriously into account.

India has 84 native Grandmasters, while more than 50% of the 106 US Grandmasters are imported from other countries.

But I agree on principle: USA has the best players money can buy.

I've been playing for 14 years and I suck at chess still, well maybe I can defeat noobs otb but here on chess com my rapid elo never really crossed 1000. Nationality has nothing to do with literally anything in life. Some people are good at some things and others aren't.
