Why not?

Chess_Player_lol

because shogi and xiangqi are actual games not chess variants. if you want to play shogi i would reccomend playing on 81dojo or lishogi. as for xiangqi i dont know of any sites but im sure if you look for it you will find it.

Nofunatall3

True, but they are much more like chess than some weird variants on the site.

They are just not chess. This is Chess.com.

I don't care if they're really chess variants or not, anyway having them here would be great for Chess.com.

The Chinese also sort of do. They refer to the FIDE game as 'International Xiangqi'.

BTW, the FIDE game is also a chess variant, originally known as the Mad Queen variant. It is not the original form of chess that came to Europe through the Arabic/Persion culture.

Shogi and xiangqi are just chess with different rules. Just like variants.

The term "Chess variants" can be used in different ways. More specifically, it refers to games that are derived directly from Chess. More generally, it can refer to games that are "like Chess".
Chess, XiangQi, and Shogi are having similar features, but they are each derived from older games and have evolved distinctly. For example, Chess comes from the Persian Shatranj and Shatranj comes from the Indian Chaturanga. OTOH, it's not clear what the relationship of XiangQi is with the old Indian game - did it derive from it or did it inspire it? Shogi also has a long history of variants played on larger boards, before it standardized into the game of today. It seems Shogi might have been derived from Chaturanga via Makruk. So you might call Chess, XiangQi, and Shogi "Chaturanga variants", but not exactly "Chess variants". And XiangQi could always be under question, because there is no clear link between it and Chaturanga.

Sure there is a linkhappy.png

The maening of all chess (variants) is to capture the king, general (shogi & qianqi) or the governor (qianqi) of the opponent.

The point is that when there exists a general interpretation, those complaining that a more limited specific interpretation does not apply don't really have a case.
