I’m not sure I like the creepy new show Squid Game
but I can’t stop watching it.

Can I use that picture as Halloween tournament trophy or too creepy ?

I didn't see the series but I read the book. I was exceedingly unimpressed with it. In my opinion the plot was thin and rather contrived, the character development lacked real substance and the writing itself seemed second-rate. The best thing about it was that it was short enough to get through in an hour or two. I understand the series had the redeeming qualities of opulent sets and fine acting.

You should watch the series, if at all

When I collaborated with GM Larry Kaufman and former chess star Diana Lanni to write Beth Harmon, the isoLanni?, I had to read the book, as well as confer with a given number of people, to understand what I was expected to write about and how to approach it.  I was underwhelmed by the book and since I almost never watch tv or films, I saw no reason to watch an adaptation of a novel that I wasn't fond of.  Of course, since it's a general consensus that film adaptations of great novels aren't usually equal to the novel, the converse might be possible - that a film adaptation of a mediocre novel might be an improvement.  I've never felt motivated to find out.

Btw, since I'd written the above article, Ms. Lanni came up with excellent evidence to gainsay Tevis' disingenuous claim that he didn't base the novel on a living person.

I very much enjoyed the book, as I have enjoyed other works by Walter Tevis. However, It's been well over ten years since I read it, so perhaps I should read it again. After I've done that, I'll get back if I still stand by my original impression.
