How to properly advertise and run a club.

Sort:
Christmas1tree

Im mainly doing this because im seeing a massive influx in forum posts saying "please join" and just giving the link to the club without giving convincing reasoning. If you want a good example of how to promote a club that is very convincing check out My club promotion.

But if you dont want to look at that ill just give you a rundown.

Ill also go over the things you should do in your club.

Titling Your Post.

First things first, never use please in the title, this makes people think your desperate or your club is small.

Try to stay away from "calling all" this is not effective to people who arent what you are calling for and will make them feel left out, even then they can still just join it, this also doesnt work because people who are what your looking for are not willing to join the club when its just those people.

The best way to hook people in is say the name of the club and give a 3 or 4 word Hook, something like accepting anyone or for low ranked players with some sort of flow in the middle.

Post contents

Do not make your posts short. this shows that you pored next to no effort into the post and people will just click off of it. Your posts should be long and thought out.

You should include a brief description at the beginning and in the next lines go into more detail. This part needs to include what you do in the club aswell as some customs in the club, for example in our club we have many customs like weekly puzzles and such.

You should also embed your link into a text, there is a button for that above where you type, it looks like a link, there copy paste the link you want and what you want it to look like. this serves to let people know what your doing as well as reduce clutter in your post.

Try avoiding using too many pictures, And if you do include them, keep them at the beginning of the post.

Using invites.

Sometimes you can just invite people to your club, via going to club and clicking invite or invite someone directly through there account page. Sometimes using this is more effective than advertising  on the forum. and the invite shows the description of the club with it so you dont have to go through that much effort to convince someone. it also shows up in their mail(i dont know why you as the sender cant see it) to click on. Something people dont know about sending invites is that you can send the same invite with the same description and everything to multiple, however this is limited due to chess.com, get premium if you want to invite literally everyone. also you cant spam invites so this is a less annoying option.

Knowing how to run your club.

Knowing how to run your club and keep it active is just as impotent as advertising it.

Having a strong moderation structure.

Every club needs moderation, you cant just run a 50 player club by yourself.

Only promote trustworthy and skilled people. The exact skill may vary. Also never promote anyone to superAdmins Except very close friends, the reason why is super admins have the power to delete the club entirely. So dont promote anyone to super admin, admin and coordinators are fine to promote to.

More successful clubs have a decently large trustworthy moderation structure. And when you have a lot of things happening in the club and a lot of people to get to, split the work. Give admins and coordinators special roles or things to do. this reduces the work you have to do, keeps your admins busy, and allows you to extend your club greatly.

Always keep in contact with your admins and coordinators. this will make it much easier to manage things, you can assign them things to do and if they have something wrong or questions they can get help from you. this system can more easily manage a larger club.

Keeping your club active

Sometimes people get bored of arenas and club battles. Thats why you need to provide more things to do.Sometimes people get bored of ordinary chess. thats why every arena or battle, mix it up, play diffrent varients or change piece positions. You should also provide other means of entertainment. tank my club for example, i provide puzzles made by members of the club aswell as weekly puzzles.

If you have many things in the club for your members to do, they will not leave or get bored.

Providing recognition.

People want to be known, and when you give people shoutouts, they feel accomplished. shout out new members, top players, or people in the club that are doing outstanding.

Keeping people informed

Keep your club description up to date with all the new stuff included

Use announcements to keep people informed, announce when the next event is taking place, you can shout out people here. You can also use it to tell people changes in the club. Its best to also do daily news keeping people up to date daily.

Adding something special.

Do something in your club that no other club does, this makes your club stand out from the others making your club look more fun and professional. This can range from puzzles to unique arenas and battles to custom forums etc etc.

Using Private club forums.

If you have something special for your club, take for instance in my club we have a whole forum dedicated to puzzles. here is the likely place you would put it. If it is special make sure to state the rules of that specific forum as a description. Also remember you can pin forums so they show above any non pinned posts. You can also lock a forum so no one can post in there. you can also lock the comments for announcements as well. Having active forums in your club can allow people to interact with other people in the club in various ways, some that not even the chat room can do, so keep your club forums active.

How to schedule and organize arenas and vote chess matches.

It is a good idea to have multiple vote chess matches because they are based on hour to day time increments,, so having multiple of these matches can help people in your club stay active and it can increase your club rank.

Never have multiple arenas on the same day, this can cause splitting and your arenas will be less populated. It is a good idea to separate your arenas wisely.

Scheduled your arenas wisely, it isn't a good idea to scheduled your arena on the same day, give it about a week. once that is done you should announce to people the date and time of the arena so people can be online for that arena.

Keep your arenas unique. mix things up for your arenas, this increases people wanting to participate in the arena and it makes it more fun

This is just a suggestion, set arena time to 12 or 24 hours, this way the arena stays active for the entire day instead of just a few hours.

More coming soon.   but overall these are the basics.   over a few days i will be adding to this making it more and more informative so this isn't it. I hope your clubs go well.

How are you supposed to spam invites to people if you don't know their usernames? I need this since I am starting a club.

Thanks a ton! Just made this new club named New York Check and need a way to keep active and making people come into the club, even though I was originally looking for “How to make custom roles in chess.com clubs”.

I own a club, The Problemists' club. It is for puzzle composers and those who are interested in discussing and solving them. Are there any puzzle-interested people here?
