At what level do chess.com users just become less toxic

I gave some thought into this after a 2287 rated person started laughing at me mid game for losing a piece and just generally being toxic mid-game. (Don't worry, I managed to hold that game to a draw)

Then during world champs chess tv chat today, I met a few quite toxic people around 900-1100 range, and that made my wonder at which level do people just stop being toxic? I'd assume around the 1300-1500 range cuz thats when people focus on the actual game rather than bad mouthing opponents.

But anyways, what rating range do you think the community becomes less toxic?

I find it gets worse the higher you go. Players take the game more seriously, more personally. This is why I have my chat and messages disabled, by default.

There are, however, kind and friendly players at all levels. But the loudmouths tend to stand out the most ...

I've never got much above 1100, so I can't speak about hostility at higher levels. But I've experienced this kind of thing at my level, people laughing at me if I make a mistake, calling me loser (usually with misspelling and poor grammar) also sometimes accusing me of cheating when the game isn't going their way.

Fortunately it's fairly infrequent, it's only happened 3 or 4 times in almost 2000 games. When people are hostile like that, it usually means they don't feel good about themselves, they're not good enough, and this turns into anger.

It can be upsetting, on one occasion I wasnt having a great day (various reasons) and I could have done without 'chess rage' as part of my reason for playing is to relax with peace and quiet. I asked the guy why he needed/wanted to mock me over my error (I'd hung a rook) and what he thought might be the possible effect of this kind of harassment on a person. He wasn't really able to articulate his motives.

As I say, fortunately it's pretty infrequent. Some people advocate for simply disabling chat, which is a practical solution. However, I've had some good conversations with other players, 99% of the chats are friendly, 'good game', 'unlucky not seeing the threat' etc.

I guess it's all part and parcel of the wonderful world of the Internet, behind our screens we sometimes let loose with certain behaviours we just wouldn't do irl.

I’m just saying that you have no clue about the real world outside of Chess.com

Nobody’s cheating they’re just saying it to make you feel worse about yourself.

most players want to get to a level where they feel like they are better than the average player so about 1200 i used to get trash talk but after i went above 1200 it stopped most 1200s are happy enough with their rating so theres no indignation around 1100 players start to become more humble so id say 1200~

TheNameofNames

it probably picks up again around 1600 a little bit id wager

I had a guy start hurling a bunch of slurs and other not nice words at me after he failed the scholar's mate in the most downright hilarious way possible.

I don't have the game, so you'll have to take my word for it.

Observe:

I don't read chats now, to say the least. Made it all the more satisfying to continue absolutely slaughtering him though (he didn't resign).

It doesn't really matter the rank...The only truth is that if I win it's because I'm amazing & if I lose you cheated. I don't make the rules...haha

Never? It's human nature to be awful to each other. But, I concur that the higher you go, both the seriousness and professionalism go up. This can lead to two results, you either break down on your opponents, or you break down when you get home. Chess is not a very healthy game, because the excuses you can give don't comfort you when you still lose.

Not the best of behaviors but doesn't sound too bad.

Is everything toxic now?

It's not eliminated entirely at any level. Higher-rated players are generally more focused on the game, but egos or competitive pressures can still lead to occasional rudeness.

It doesn't I block like everyone I lose to because I hate loosing and I like to spite people. When I play chess my goal is to absolutely destroy my opponents. It's just the nature of chess

you can actually win playing defensively and in games where the accuracies are pretty much equal. I don't think it's chess so much as you like to hurt/dominate other people.

In my experience people stop being crappy for the most part over 1800 in blitz and over 1900 in bullet.

FrancisWeed

for blitz I guess people are still crappy sometimes but their moves are strong and make sense so it's not as annoying. And in bullet over 1900 it's sort of the same thing but people stop doing the really annoying stuff like premoving pieces randomly in the middle of the game because at that level people are fast enough to just get a really good position if you waste too many moves.

Chess is about competition and absolute domination, it is about destroying and winning at all costs. It's the nature of the game.

HangingPiecesChomper

low rated players on these forums are so toxic

it isn't it's about checkmating the opponents king. All that other stuff is what you want it to be about.

think about it like as if it were football. The point is not to have the best stats it's to have the most points.
