Change the 'pop' sound when your opponent has made a move in online chess

When your opponent has made a move in online chess chess.com makes a 'pop' noise to let me know. This is good, but even better might be if it could play a sound annoucing the move. For example, it could say "pawn to f4", "king takes rook", etc. Where's the right place on chess.com to request this?

Just out of curiosity, what would be the point of this?

danialgibson

What's the point of the 'pop' noise it currently makes? To let me know that a move has been played. Why not tell me the move that was played? If I'm away from my computer then hearing what the move was is more useful than simply knowing that a move was made.

Well, usually, it is assumed that you look at the board. And to make a program that says the move aloud would take a ton of programming and make the page load slower. Also, many players might find it very annoying, because in tournament play, nobody says what move they made, you just hear the piece hit the board.

Even if it told you the move, you would probably have to look at the board again anyway right?...

Also my parents don't know I play chess and if I have the sound on and am listening to music or something, a nice refreshing "pop!" is much more convenient.

So have 3 options - no sound, pop, or announce the move. People could choose whatever is most suitable for them.

Still, I think it would require a huge amount of time and work that chess.com staff has better things to do with, and it will only benefit a very small number of people.

danialgibson

Yes, it would be up to chess.com to determine how much work it would require and if they think it is worth it. My question is, how do I submit the idea to them to decide? Do they read these forums or is there another forum that I should use or an email address that I should email?

Probably best place to post idea is newish topic thread "Site Feedback and  Suggestions"

You know what I'd really like to be able to do?  I'd like to be able to LOWER THE VOLUME on the sound.  Often times I like to listen to music or "newstalk" while I'm playing.  If I have the music/newstalk loud enough to hear well the sound of the chess move is DEAFENING.

Anyone know if that can be adjusted?

could we have the computer say something to raise my esteem and make me feel good, like,  "fantastic move sir,you are a real winner..." or something like that, just thinking outloud here..

It's possible to go some way towards doing this yourself: alert-sounds---customisation.

ahhh polydiatonic, wouldn't that be the function of the volume control on your individual PC ?

PolyPhonic [sic] was probably hoping that the chess move 'pop' was on a separate channel from played music, and that it could be made loud relative to the music channel.

Didn't the GUI for some sound cards let you set volume independently for different sources?

I've seen some programs that advertise changing volume for certain file types (.wav, .mp3, ...) but not others (midi); other programs let you alter volume, balance, etc. on a per application basis. The opposite of what was asked is also available: maintaining a constant volume whatever it says in the MP3 file.

I want control over them individually...get it?

Most of my play is with my grandchildren, and they are frequently making moves between other activities.  And I am frequently busy in the house or yard, and either too far from the laptop to hear the pop, or there are too many background sound (radio, TV, etc.).   For example, I have my laptop on the patio right now so as to monitor a game.  However, there is no way I'm going to hear the pop sound.

In the physical world, a quick glance at a board could alert one if it was his/her move, even from across a room.  However, with online play, one has to approach the screen close enough to either read "My Move" on a tab - assuming multiples tabs are open - which is frequently my case, or to look at the board on the screen.   If we had a choice of the pop or a repeating and more audible sound, it would facillitate my play very much.  However, I've contacted tech support some time ago about this, and the've shown no interest in addressing this request.
